Day Student Tuition and Fees

Maine students coming from towns with school choice do not pay tuition directly to the school. If you have questions about whether your town has school choice, contact the Office of the Superintendent for the town or district in which the student resides for more information. Fees for activities, books, testing, and athletics are extra and are the responsibility of the individual family. The school’s excellent college preparatory program is open to day students from any Maine town. Students from non-school choice towns apply as private-pay students.

Private-Pay Cost

  • Tuition: $9,950
  • Activity fee: $410
  • Sports participation fee: $300

Financial Aid

For students beginning in August of each year, a limited amount of tuition assistance is available for day students based on financial need. Please note that the admission decision is separate from the financial aid decision. In most cases, an offer of admission is made, followed by a financial aid decision as soon as all materials are received. Admission will not necessarily result in a financial aid award, even when need is indicated. Families are encouraged to apply for financial aid at the same time as the academic application is submitted. Financial aid applications submitted after April 1 are less likely to result in awards.

Financial aid is intended to offset a portion of tuition and fees; a family contribution is always required. Awards range from most of tuition to smaller amounts designed to make John Bapst possible for talented students who need the kind of challenge the school offers. No awards of full financial aid are available.

The school fully allocates its financial aid budget before the beginning of each school year. For this reason financial aid is not usually available for families whose students transfers in during a school year. Please read the form: Applying for Student Financial Aid. When you are ready to apply, please complete the Financial Aid Application Data Form and return it to the school.

In addition to completing and returning the application, families will be asked to provide a copy of their most recent federal tax return (only the 1040 or comparable form, not the supporting schedules) to the school’s Director of Finance in an envelope marked Confidential. For more information, call the Business Office and speak to William Meier, Director of Finance and Operations.

Payment Methods

Tuition may be paid by check or cash, and fees may be paid by check, cash, or credit card. Checks should be made payable to John Bapst MHS and can be mailed or hand-delivered to the Administration Office at 100 Broadway, Bangor, ME 04401. To make a payment by credit card, please call and ask for the Business Office.

Payment Due Dates

For incoming freshmen and transfer students, the activity fee is due upon the student’s acceptance and serves to hold the student’s place for the upcoming year. For returning students, the activity fee is due on July 15. It becomes nonrefundable on the first day of the academic year. The sports fee is due as of the start of practice for the first sport in which the student chooses to participate. It is nonrefundable once the season for that sport begins. Tuition may be paid in two equal installments, due by August 15 and December 15. Other payment arrangements may be made by contacting the Business Office.

Boarding Student Tuition and Fees

  • Boarding or Homestay Program (last year): $45,750
  • Application Fee for International Students: $75

The above fees include tuition, room and board, English language support (ESL) if needed, activity fee, text books, sports participation, health insurance, transportation to and from Bangor International Airport, and transportation for most weekend activities. Students will be responsible for personal expenses, AP exam fees and school trips on weekends and during vacations.

Students electing the Homestay Program pay an additional fee of $3,000, or $1,500 per semester, to cover the program’s administrative costs. Homestay students are provided breakfast, dinner, and weekend meals in their homestay. Lunch on campus is provided, and they are also allowed to take meals on campus if they arrive early or stay late.

Tuition Billing

An enrollment deposit of $3,500 is required to accompany the enrollment contract once the student has been accepted. This deposit is nonrefundable, and is applied against the boarding tuition. Payment of the enrollment deposit may be made by credit card. The annual fee may be paid in two installments. The first half is due on August 1. The balance is due on December 15. Wire transfer is the preferred method of payment and is generally more economical. If the boarding tuition is paid by credit card, a convenience fee will be charged by John Bapst. The school charges no additional fee for payment by wire transfer.
