Lingnan University is the liberal arts university in Hong Kong and we have the longest established tradition among the local institutions of higher education. Our history can be dated back to 1888, when our forerunner, the Christian College in China, was founded in Guangzhou, and to 1967, when the institution, as Lingnan College, was re-established in Hong Kong. In 2015, Lingnan University was named as one of the “Top 10 Liberal Arts College in Asia” by Forbes.

We offer undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate programmes in the areas of Arts, Business and Social Sciences, and our broad curriculum covers an array of general education and interdisciplinary courses to provide students with a firm knowledge foundation across different subjects. We groom students to think critically and creatively, judge independently, care genuinely, and act appropriately and responsibly, and we prepare them to pursue their goals in a rapidly changing environment.

True to our identity as a liberal arts university, we are characterised by our broad-based curriculum, a fully residential campus, close faculty-student relationship and an emphasis on exchange and extra-curricular learning experiences.

To gain experience in real work settings and broaden exposure in culturally diverse environments, Lingnan students can participate in various international internship programmes including ASEAN Internship Scheme, Global Internships, Disney Cultural Exchange Program, Mainland Summer Internship Programme and many others. About 80% of our undergraduates can spend a term studying abroad in one of our 190-plus partner institutions in about 40 countries, or participate in short-term summer programmes. We also uphold our motto “Education for Service” by providing students with service-learning and community service opportunities for engaging with society and helping those in need.

Lingnan University encourages faculty and students to contribute to society through research and knowledge transfer. Our sizable pool of experienced scholars in the arts, business and social sciences disciplines combine scholarly work with applied, policy-oriented research, and address topics in areas like finance, fiscal and monetary policy, cultural policy, creative industries, health and ageing, population, and institutions and governance.

We are the only university in Hong Kong that provides students with 100% hostel residency. All our undergraduates live on campus and develop their strengths in our Living Learning Communities. Be prepared to make lifelong friends in our residential halls and start your exciting university life here.

The vision of the university is To excel as a leading Asian liberal arts university with international recognition, distinguished by outstanding teaching, learning, scholarship and community engagement.

Lingnan aims to build a community of learning and discovery with collegial students and scholar-teachers who respect each other, keep an open mind, embrace diversity, appreciate different views, uphold academic freedom and freedom of expression, and accept responsibility for their words and deeds.

Lingnan endeavours to cultivate students’ whole-person and all-round growth. It encourages students to pursue independent and critical thinking, creativity and innovation, excellent communication skills including a high level of literacy, social responsibility, personal virtue, cultural accomplishment and a passion for lifelong learning.

At Lingnan, students are provided with the best liberal arts education through a broad-based curriculum, close staff-student relationship, a vibrant full residential campus, abundant service learning and exchange opportunities, extensive extra-curricular activities, and strong alumni and community support. Our students can make the most out of the closely-knit, energetic and caring campus life in the University. We are dedicated to building an international campus and actively establishing strategic collaborations with prominent universities worldwide. Through our sustained efforts in promoting liberal arts education, we are delighted to see that Lingnan University was named as one of the “Top 10 Liberal Arts Colleges in Asia” by Forbes in 2015. This recognition not only acknowledges the efforts of generations of Lingnanians but also encourages us to scale new heights.

There is Lingnan Restaurant in Lingnan University. It is above the level of dim sum, has a very high floor and unique decoration. It is a pleasure to bring your children to have tea and take a look at the Nanling architecture.
