Monksdown is a Community Primary School for girls and boys aged between 3-11 years, maintained by the City of Liverpool Education Authority.

At Monksdown we strive to create and establish a safe, happy and secure environment. We aim to build strong and lasting relationships with parents so that our close partnership is seen as the way forward at all times.

Monksdown is at the heart of the Norris Green community and enjoys an excellent reputation. Our pupils are renowned throughout the city for their courteous manners and the way they conduct themselves in public. They are enthusiastic, keen to learn and give of their best at all times.

At Monksdown Primary School, we aim to lay the foundations for life by offering a positive, rich experience for all pupils. We believe that all children are entitled to develop to their fullest potential – academically, socially, emotionally, spiritually and creatively, enabling each child to grow in confidence to participate in the wider community.

We provide a happy, safe and caring environment that is stimulating, challenging, inclusive and enjoyable. We will achieve this by working closely in partnership with parents and the community in a relationship that puts the child first at all times.

The Department for Education defines British Values as follows:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance

At Monksdown Primary School, we value the diverse ethnic backgrounds of all pupils and families and we teach tolerance and respect for the differences in our community and the wider world. Underpinning all of this, are a range of curriculum topics which have strong links to Britain, both past and present. Our school promotes and believes in the British characteristics of Tolerance, Respect, Fair Play and Good Community Spirit.

We aim to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant citizens who make a positive difference to British society and to the world. We encourage our children to be creative, unique, open-minded and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and of others in our school, our local community and the wider world.

English is at the heart of every child and adults life. We live in an environment where written text is all around us and we use the fundamentals of writing and reading in our daily lives. This is why at Monksdown we believe that English should be at the heart of all aspects of school life.

At Monksdown we aim to deliver a high quality English curriculum that gives children the best possible opportunities to become confident and successful readers and writers with a deep love and understanding of the English language. We believe the development of reading and writing skills is central to improving a child’s life chances.

Children are given daily opportunities to explore and develop their reading and writing skills through a number of rich, engaging and creative activities in order to prepare them for the world they live in.

We understand the importance of writing and language in our lives and we are committed to ensuring we do our very best to help the children in our care become creative writers and successful readers.

Mathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to use number, calculate, reason and solve problems. It helps children to understand relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives. Our aim is to create a culture where mathematics is seen in a positive light so children understand the importance of numeracy skills in the ‘real world’.

At Monksdown, we embrace the core aims of the new National Curriculum: fluency, accuracy, precision, reasoning and problem solving. A new scheme, Mathematics Mastery is currently being filtered throughout the school on a rolling program, to ensure a consistent approach to delivering these key aspects of the curriculum.

Here at Monksdown Primary our vision for Religious Education is to inspire religiously literate young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect spiritually, think ethically, and who are aware of the demands of religious commitment in everyday life. Learning about other cultures and religions is an important part of our development.
