A south-western country in the Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is home to the North Island and the South Island. It is famous for the mythical Middle Earth location in “Lord of the Rings” and Mt. Victoria.

There are two types of public holidays in New Zealand – those that are celebrated on Mondays and those holidays which are not celebrated on Mondays.

Those holidays celebrated on Mondays are holidays which fall on the weekend. Great examples of this are New Year and Christmas holidays. Meanwhile, other public are taken on the day which they fall.

In New Zealand, workers who render time working during a holiday must be both paid time-and-a-half and given an alternative holiday. Most businesses are open during holidays but with restrictions.

Public holidays in New Zealand comprise of cultural, religious, and national holidays which are mandated in New Zealand. All employees are entitled to 10 public holidays and 20 annual leave days per year.

Waitangi Day

Good Friday
In New Zealand, Good Friday is the start of a four-day weekend. This includes Easter Monday. Most people go on trips out of town to celebrate this holiday.

Easter Monday
A statutory holiday in New Zealand, Easter Monday is commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

ANZAC Day
It is a day of remembrance in New Zealand to remember all New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations”. It’s a day to remember their contributions and sufferings.

Queen’s Birthday
The Queen’s Birthday is celebrated in New Zealand every first Monday of June each year. The country is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the reigning monarch.

Labor Day
The struggle to achieve an 8-hour working day is what Labor Day remembers. They were the first in the world to claim the right in 1840 because of Samuel Parnell.

Christmas Day
Christmas is a holiday which commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ

Boxing Day
Boxing Day occurs the day after Christmas each year. Today, it is considered as an extension of the Christmas holidays.
