Founded in 1880, Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is an independent, college preparatory school for girls. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, Newton is a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, which spans 41 countries and 22 cities in the United States.

At Newton Country Day young women are prepared for lives of courage and confidence. Such preparation is accomplished deliberately, guiding students to realize the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical dimensions of their lives. Here, students experience the transformative power of God's love for each of them. Secure in that knowledge, students develop a deep and enduring capacity for scholarly engagement and social justice.

Highly motivated girls of all faiths energize the school and join a community of vigorous intellect, active compassion, and joyful traditions. Students discover and develop their individual talents and dedicate their gifts to the service of others.

Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart is a member of the International Network of Sacred Heart Schools, the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, and the Association of Independent Schools in New England.

The demands placed on women today highlight the need to develop in our girls a sense of their power and ability. Single sex education has proven time and again to be fundamental in developing a young woman’s sense of self and purpose. Graduates of girls' schools account for a significant percentage of women in leadership positions in industry, academia, public life, and throughout all professions.

The curriculum offers a full range of courses through the Advanced Placement level in the arts, humanities, modern and classical languages, mathematics, religion and sciences, as well as strong programs in athletics and wellness, and extracurricular activities. Newton Country Day students are expected to act with integrity, to learn to think critically, to communicate clearly, to deepen their intellectual curiosity and creativity, and to develop and apply scientific and technological knowledge and skill.

Through the Religious Studies curriculum, the encouragement of personal prayer and public worship, and a strong emphasis on ethics and community service, Newton Country Day fosters in its students reflection, a commitment to social action and a critical sensibility toward materialism. Nurturing the student’s personal relationship with God and an understanding of the evolving tradition of the Catholic Church, the program also educates to a knowledge and appreciation of other expressions of religious belief.

In a society characterized by diversity, Newton Country Day commits itself to inspire in each student a desire to build just and enriching relationships. Newton Country Day seeks to be a community that embraces differences and celebrates the fundamental unity of the human family and the dignity of the human person. Both in the classroom and through programs in community service, students are educated to an awareness of economic, political, and social problems and are made aware of their responsibility to work for a more just and peaceful world.

Newton Country Day educates young women to assume leadership and to take initiative in the school and in the world. The School promotes the hope, zeal, compassion and commitment necessary to meet the challenges of a complex society. The entire educational program has as its end the formation of balanced and self-assured women who possess the courage and confidence to respond generously, competently, and responsibly to the demands of their lives and to the needs of the world.

Independent yet united in spirit and purpose, the international community of Schools of the Sacred Heart believes in educating the whole child, and preparing her to live fully and wisely. At the core of the Sacred Heart education are the Five Goals, principles that express the intentions and hopes of our 200-year tradition.

Newton Country Day School's culture and identity are bound inextricably to the vision set forth in the Goals of Sacred Heart Schools. They awaken and spur our faith, intellect, social action, community building, and personal growth. Whether planning a community service project, tackling an academic challenge, or supporting one another, Newton students and faculty frame their choices and actions in accordance with the Five Goals. When faced with challenges, they give us the language and focus to understand and prevail.

During their years at Newton Country Day School, students measure their actions in the light of the Five Goals, until doing so becomes a habit of being. By the time our students graduate, these principles have become an internal well of wisdom and strength from which they draw throughout their lives.
