What is the origin of Parents’ Day?

Parents’ Day was observed in South Korea since May 8, 1973, in replacement of Mother’s Day. In South Korea, events for this day revolve around parents and include giving parents carnations, as well as attending public events organized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which include public celebrations and awards. In South Korea, Parents’ Day traces its origins back to the 1930s, a period when Christian communities started celebrating Mother’s Day or Parents’ Day. Officially, Mother’s Day was declared an annual public holiday in 1956 by the State Council of South Korea. However, questions about Father’s Day were raised, and on March 30th, 1973, May 8th was declared Parents’ Day through a presidential decree. The entire week of May 8th was designated to respecting the elderly until it was abolished in 1997.

In the United States, Parents’ Day was institutionalized in 1994 under Presidents Bill Clinton’s administration and is observed across the 50 states. The holiday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July to recognize, encourage, and support the role of parents in bringing up their children. Initially, the bill was introduced by Trent Lott, a Republican Senator and backed by members of the Unification Church that observe this holiday on a different date.

Internationally, June 1st is recognized as the Global Day of Parents, as declared by the United Nations to appreciate the commitments of parents towards their children. In the Philippines, Mother’s Day is traditionally observed on the first Monday of December. In 1921, following the appeal of Ilocos Norte Federation of Woman’s Club, the first Monday was declared as Mother’s Day. Later in 1937, President Quezon issued a declaration, decreeing Mother’s Day as Parents’ Day. The change of the holiday name was due to petitions requesting for the establishment of a separate Father’s Day holiday which was not advisable as there already existed many holiday sets and it was more fitting to celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day together. In 1980, the first Sunday and the first Monday of December were declared Father’s Day and Mother’s Day respectively.
