Pretoria Boys High School is a traditional boys school located on an 85-acre campus southeast of the city centre. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest schools in the province. With an enrolment of around 1500 pupils it is the largest boys’ school in South Africa. The school prides itself on maintaining exceptional standards and this is illustrated through our ethos of holistic education based on the fundamental pillars of a full academic, cultural and sporting programme. PBHS is a public school with additional funding generated through school fees. Three boarding houses provide accommodation for over 300 pupiWhile many of the values we choose to live by as a school are evident from the Philosophy and Mission, the following four values are considered to be the core values of the School:
The quality of knowing and doing what is morally right including taking responsibility and owning up when asked to. People of honour are held in high esteem by the community as those who can be trusted to do what is right, despite peer and social pressures. Honour relates more to how other people perceive you.
Having exceptionally good manners, so much so that this is commented upon by the school community, visitors to the school and the general public. Acting in a manner that is respectful to all, with consideration for others and their points of view. This includes respect for self, others, the school, the environment and those in authority.
Having strong moral principles that are consistently lived under all circumstances. People of integrity are honest and righteous, having an unwavering moral compass. Integrity is purely a personal quality and has to do with personal beliefs rather than perceptions of others.
The School believes that the only discipline of real significance is that which the individual imposes upon himself. This Code of Conduct aims to make each boy aware of the value of self-control, order and the need to cultivate a sense of responsibility for his own conduct and for the larger community of which he is a part. The most important rule is that every boy should be thoughtful, considerate of others and use his common sense, in accordance with the school Philosophy and Mission, and where written rules do not cover specific events or actions. This Code is written based upon the principles contained in the School Philosophy and Mission and must be read in conjunction with these two documents.
The proper school uniform must be worn at all times. Summer uniform consists of khaki shorts, short-sleeved khaki shirts, long khaki socks, brown official school shoes, school tie, and grey school jersey. Winter uniform consists of long grey flannels, long-sleeved white shirt, short grey socks, school tie, jersey and shoes as for summer, school blazer, basher (boarders only), and school scarves (may not be worn in class). The acceptable dress code should also be adhered to for all sporting activities. Please note that tracksuit tops, windbreakers etc. may NOT be worn with the school uniform; the green school drimac may be worn in rainy weather only. All personal belongings must be marked clearly with your son’s full name.
We see ourselves as an educational organisation with a sports department, whichforms one part of a School that is striving to achieve excellence in all facets of the teaching and educational service that it is providing its boys, in order that they can compete with their peers at other schools in our Country and for that matter the rest of the World. The sports programme at PBHS is undertaken for the educational value of the pursuit and the school recognises the many life lessons that our students can learn through sport. All decisions regarding sport that are not necessarily covered in this document will thus have sound educational reasoning as a basis. The school will do all it can to provide a relevant sports programme with committed coaches and fixtures for all boys.
