Ranches Primary School Marks Earth Day with Student-Led Sustainability Initiatives

Ranches Primary School Empowers Students to Take Action for the Planet Through Earth Day Initiatives

Ranches Primary School (RPS) celebrated Earth Day on Wednesday, with students actively involved in practical sustainability initiatives, helping them understand their role in protecting the environment and take meaningful action across the school and wider community.

Students took part in interactive Earth Day presentations across classrooms, delivered in collaboration with Sustainability at School – a programme focused on embedding sustainable practices in education and supporting student-led action. Through these sessions, they explored this year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, and the link between environmental sustainability and children’s rights. Pupils engaged in discussions and activities to understand what this means in practice, identifying simple, realistic actions they can take in their daily lives and making personal pledges.

The programme focused on three key outcomes: building awareness of environmental responsibility, helping students recognise their right to a safe and sustainable environment, and encouraging individual action.

Alongside the presentations, sustainability efforts were reinforced through ongoing initiatives across the school. These include ‘La Boutique: Swap & Swag’, a permanent uniform reuse programme that enables families to donate and collect pre-loved uniforms, as well as wider actions to reduce paper use, improve recycling systems and signage, and trial reduced paper towel consumption, with paper usage identified as a priority area following internal audits.

Student-led sustainability groups, including the Sustainability Squad and Sustainability Action Team, played an active role throughout, supporting the sessions, monitoring impact, and encouraging sustainable actions both in school and at home.

Through these initiatives, Ranches Primary School continues to instil sustainability into everyday school life, with a focus on practical action and student ownership.

Speaking about the initiatives, Mr. Steve Arnold, Principal of Ranches Primary School, said:
“It’s been great to see our students engage with this year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, and feel empowered to take action. This is exactly the kind of experience we want them to have – helping children understand the role they can play in shaping a more sustainable future through simple, everyday choices.”

“In our Earth Day presentation, I learned that we only have one planet, and I want to have the chance to see a polar bear one day. I will take care of the Earth so animals can be safe,” shared Ada, Year 6 student at Ranches Primary School.

“I learned that nothing should go to waste, and I want to help change the world by recycling. I will try to make better choices every day to help our planet,” shared Noah, Year 6 student at Ranches Primary School.
