Rio Lindo Adventist Academy is the boarding school for the Northern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Our co-educational school offers a commitment to excellence in its quiet, safe and picturesque location, and our dedicated staff serve with a vibrant sense of mission to the cause of education. Our culturally diverse student body creates an opportunity to interact globally while fostering a close-knit community based on mutual respect. Every student is encouraged to develop his or her potential in a nurturing environment. Staff, who live on campus, and students work, study, pray, and socialize together, creating lasting relationships unique to a boarding school experience. About 85% of Rio’s teachers have advanced degrees in their fields of teaching and work continuously to grow as teachers to better connect and engage students in quality learning.

Rio’s ultimate goal in teaching is to maximize every student’s potential, no matter the background; to make student thinkers and not mere reflectors of others’ opinions, whether in the classroom, church, or among peers. Rio’s tagline is “Learn. Serve. Lead.” and our hope is that every student will graduate and make a difference in the world by continuing to learn, serve, and lead. Rio Lindo Adventist Academy has a strong tradition of creating an atmosphere of learning, both to students and teachers alike. In the past few years, Rio’s school improvement plan has emphasized the importance of collaborative learning and the sharing of ideas to strengthen one’s education.

This school year, teachers spent more time on professional development than any previous year. With the help of educational consultants provided by a grant from the Commonweal Foundation, teachers were able to learn about national standards, assessing students to make sure they understand class content, and what the Common Core is and how it factors into our education as a nation. Teachers spent an average of 25 hours per semester in professional development to discuss and practice exercises in measurable learning. Beyond this, teachers have independently spent additional hours developing  two 2+3 lessons embracing core standards, literacy, formative assessment, then video taping themselves teaching a class. As part of this process, teachers are involved in self-review activities to continue to improve in their craft.

Rio’s ultimate goal in teaching is to maximize every student’s potential, no matter the background; to make student thinkers and not mere reflectors of others’ opinions. This Seventh-day Adventist educational mission continues to drive Rio Lindo Adventist Academy’s vision and work.
