As one of the top academic schools in Britain, teaching and learning is at the core of what we do at Rugby School in Warwickshire. Pupils at Rugby have the benefit of fantastic educational facilities and highly qualified staff. They learn what is needed to prepare fully for public examinations but, more than that, they develop a love of learning which stays with them long after they have left the School. We set high expectations of pupils not only in terms of their work ethic but also in terms of their intellectual ambition. Pupils aim high and our record of university success is proof of this.

As a top academic school, our aim at Rugby is to prepare pupils for university life and beyond. It is clear what universities are looking for. Top notch grades at both GCSE and A level but also an intellectual appetite. We firmly believe that the opportunities available here at Rugby address both of those aspects, and our pupils flourish.

Nomenclature: unsurprisingly, Rugby has developed terminology of its own in its long history for the year groups at the School. Most pupils enter the School in the F Block (Year 9) and progress through E and D. When they enter the Upper School, they become members of the Lower XX (Lower Sixth) before the final XX year.

‘Whole Person Whole Point’ is Rugby School’s defining statement of fundamental intent which generates formidable impact upon both individual and community; unleashing its true power demands the open, holistic approach of coaching.

Coaching is at the heart of Rugby School because in the quest for being well, we mobilise our hidden, creative strengths and realise that there are no limits. Coaching facilitates empowerment, response-ability, and a constant quest for fulfillment, which means our personal and institutional objectives will not only be met, year on year, but will keep on growing, organically and purposefully.

Now the School is national and international in outlook and recruitment, with boys and girls from all over the UK and 10% from overseas. As widening access to Rugby remains central to the School’s DNA, the Arnold Foundation for Rugby School was set up in 2003 to fund places for pupils who stand to gain the most from a boarding school education. The School has since joined forces with other members of the education sector as part of the new, national SpringBoard Bursary Foundation drawing on Rugby’s Arnold Foundation model.

Rugby preserves many traditions and plays infinite variations on them. We expect every pupil to own a laptop and parents rightly expect every classroom to be equipped with an interactive electronic whiteboard in a high-tech, wireless-networked, whole-School learning environment. Ask their children why they chose Rugby and you will hear about the old-fashioned virtues of house-dining and playing for the house, about belonging to a friendly extended family - about being part of a story that they themselves are still writing.
