Savonia University of Applied Sciences is one of the largest and most versatile Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. Our organization of experts educates strong professionals in six different fields of study. Our versatile Degree Programmes offer the students the opportunity to study as a fulltime student or alongside their job (Master’s Degree and specialised studies) or flexibly in the Open University of Applied Sciences. Our campuses are located in Kuopio, Iisalmi and Varkaus.

Savonia UAS wishes to serve the surrounding work life actively. Our R&D activities offer high-quality services and tailor-made solutions to the development needs of the businesses and work communities. Co-operation, networking and internationalisation are the crucial factors of our success. At Savonia, transdisciplinarity is secured by organising RDI into main axes called Competence Networks. These networks are Welfare products and services, Energy, the Environment and Safety and Industrial Design.

Savonia University of Applied Sciences is run by the Savonia University of Applied Sciences ltd. The manager of the ltd and the President of Savonia UAS is Mrs Mervi Vidgrén.

The two main tasks for the University of Applied Sciences are education and research, development and innovation (RDI). RDI also promotes regional development and internationalisation. Savonia produces new competences and knowledge for the use of local operators, based on working life orientation.

Integration of RDI activities with education and learning is realised in Savonia’s Open Innovation Space thinking (OIS), which means:

  • working life orientation
  • students’ active role in projects and in developing work and business life
  • networking
  • transdisciplinary approach

The starting point of RDI is the context of application. Diverse expertise is brought together in RDI networks. At Savonia, production of new knowledge is rooted in practice. The quality of new skills and knowledge produced is ultimately measured within their fields of application. Savonia’s RDI activities offer variety of services and forms of co-operation to the businesses, communities, and organisations from different fields as well as to private individuals.

The competence-based curricula of Savonia consist of two parts: the general information and the specific contents of course descriptions. The general part includes the basis of education, competence standards, structure of studies, development of expertise, methods of implementation and table of courses. You can access the specific contents, ie course descriptions, by clicking on the course codes on the course table. It is good to study your degree programme's curriculum before starting your studies. You can find it below.

The curriculum comes with a course plan, which describes in more detail what a student is required to do to pass the course. Each lecturer presents a course plan when his/her course starts and uploads the plan on the learning environment Moodle. In addition to the requirements, the course plan informs the contents, objectives, timing, extent and student workload, assessment criteria and the plan for processing course feedback given by the students.

Savonia UAS is conscious of its social responsibilities. They are best fulfilled by executing the main tasks of the organisation - education and RDI - with high quality and good performance. The results and effectiveness of the social responsibility are created through education and results of RDI.
