New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1st in celebration of the start of a new year based on the Gregorian calendar and occurs precisely one week after Christmas.

Liberation Day
Liberation Day is observed on March 3rd in commemoration of the date the treaty of San Stefano was signed in 1878. This peace treaty marked the end of the RussianTurkish War and declared Bulgaria an independent state.

This day is observed on the Friday before Orthodox Easter Sunday. Orthodox Good Friday marks the day that Jesus was crucified.

This day is also referred to as May Day or International Workers Day and is observed on May 1st in celebration of the achievements of the labor movements which led to the institution of an 8-hour workday.

Army Day
This day is also referred to as Saint George’s Day and is observed on May 6th. This day commemorates Saint George, the patron saint of the Bulgarian armed forces.

Culture and Literacy Day
This day is also referred to as Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavonic Literature Day or Alphabet Day and is celebrated on March 24th. It commemorates Saints Cyril and Methodius who were Christian missionaries credited with devising the Glagolitic Alphabet.

Unification Day
Unification Day marks the unification of Eastern Rumelia and Bulgaria in 1885 and is celebrated on September 6th. According to many Bulgarians, the occurrences of September 6th were more important to the formation of Bulgaria than the signing of the treaty of San Stefano in 1877, observed as Bulgaria’s National Day.

Independence Day
This holiday is observed on September 22nd in commemoration of Bulgaria’s independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908.

Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve is celebrated on December 24th.

Christmas Day
Christmas Day is observed on December 25th in celebration of the Nativity of Jesus, which occurred on the same date in 1 BC.
