

School holidays in Finland are different from region to region. These holidays include autumn, Christmas, winter and summer holidays and usually last from one to two weeks except summer holidays which last between 10 to 11 weeks. School holidays in Finland are set by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
In Finland, the state determines the number of holidays that schools can have while individual schools, public or private, determine the dates for these holidays. Therefore, each school in Finland sets their own holidays dates, and in some cases, the lower grades and upper grades of the same school may have different holiday dates. However, all these holidays are set to take place within a specific period as indicated below.

New Year’s Day
New Year’s Day is celebrated on January 1st which marks the beginning of a new year based on the Gregorian calendar and falls precisely one week after Christmas.
Epiphany
Epiphany is observed on January 6th in celebration of the presentation of baby Jesus to the three wise men. This day is also known as Three Kings Day.
Good Friday
Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus.
Second Easter Day
Also known as Easter Monday, Second Easter Day is observed in either March or April. On this day Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
Vappu
Vappu is an annual holiday observed in Finland on May 1st to celebrate the end of winter. Mostly, May 1st is associated with the celebrations of the achievements of the labor day movement across the globe and is also referred to as May Day, Labour Day or International Workers Day.
Ascension Day
Ascension Day is observed 40 days after Easter in celebration of Jesus’ ascension into heaven after the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
Midsummer Day
This public holiday is observed annually on the Saturday falling between June 20th – 26th. Generally, the actual date of Midsummer’s Day varies between June 20th – 21st. Similar to New Year’s Day celebrations, Midsummer’s Day celebrations happen on the eve of or the Friday before the actual date.
All Saints’ Day
All Saints’ Day, also known as Feast of Saints, All Hallows’ Day or Hallowmas, is observed on November 1st in celebration of all the Christian saints.
Independence Day
Independence Day is an annual holiday observed on December 6th in celebration of Finland’s 1917 Declaration of Independence from the Russian empire.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day and is observed on December 24th.
Christmas Day
Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25th in celebration of the Nativity of Jesus, which is believed to have taken place on the same date in 1 BC.
Second Day of Christmas
The Second Day of Christmas is also referred to as Boxing Day or St. Stephen’s Day. It is observed on December 26th in celebration of St. Stephen who was the first Christian martyr.
