Sharjah is the third-largest and third most populous emirate in the UAE. It is home to 2.374 million people (2019) and is known as the country’s cultural capital.

Public holidays in Sharjah are also observed by the rest of the emirates in the UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah). Most of these holidays are Islamic holidays, celebrated by the country’s Muslim people.

Leilat al-Mairaj (The Prophet’s Ascension)
This marks Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey, when he ascended to the heavens and traveled to Jerusalem in one night.

Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad. Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset for a whole month during this time.

Eid al Fitr
Known as the End of Ramadan or Breaking of the Fast, Eid Al Fitr is marked with festivities and celebrations in the UAE.

Arafat (Hajj) Day
This holiday marks the second day of hajj or pilgrimage.

Eid al Adha
Eid Al Adha is the Feast of the Sacrifice and is also known as the Greater Eid. It commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, in the name of God.

Islamic New Year (Al Hijri)
This marks the start of a new Islamic calendar year.

Mouloud (The Prophet’s Birthday)
Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is also a public holiday in the UAE.

Commemoration Day
Commemoration Day or UAE Martyr’s Day commemorates the fallen soldiers of the UAE who died while in service to the nation.

National Day
The UAE National Day is celebrated every December 2nd, and commemorates the union between the seven emirates that comprise the UAE.
