Sir Pierre Van Ryneveld is a state high school that operates within the Gauteng Department of Education and is based in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. The school was established in 1966 to cater for the needs of learners requiring English medium education. During the past three decades the school has provided for the educational needs of thousands of young men and women. We are a community based school that seeks to provide our learners with basic curriculum needs and to empower them with knowledge and life skills that will enable them to make a positive contribution to our country.
The official name change took place on August 12, 1972 at an inauguration ceremony. Sir Pierre attended the official ceremony to mark the official opening of the school named after him. Sadly, this was to be his last formal function as he died soon after.
Currently, as an ex-model C school we are catering for approximately 1320 learners. We are a community based school that seeks to provide our learners with basic curriculum needs and to empower them with knowledge and life skills that will enable them to make a positive contribution to our country.
This school’s mission, as an essentially academic institution, is to unlock the treasures of knowledge and skill for each individual pupil in harmony with our calling to encourage all pupils in our care to social maturity and the fulfillment of their talents.
After some years of absence we started Cricket again in 2012. We considered it a year where we just wanted to get things started but what a surprise. The first team won 4 out of the 5 matches that were played. We also had such a lot of interest that we could have managed to put 3 teams together. The season is actually in the 3rd and 4th term but we will start as early as May to get ready for the season as we are entering the league again after some years. Soccer has been active in the school since 1985 and the boys are always highly motivated to participate.
We have 4 soccer teams being U/14, U/15, U/17 and U/19. The soccer players are encouraged to represent the school with pride as they are regarded as the ambassadors of the school. Our vision for soccer is to encourage the soccer players to achieve social maturity and fulfillment of their talents through work ethic which ensures optimal employment of the gifts of soul, mind and body. Our soccer teams are affiliated to the Ekhurhuleni League matches are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Athletics is our main summer sport and takes place in the first term of every year. We have an Inter House meeting where we encourage mass participation of all learners. After this meeting we select a team that represents the school in friendly meetings in preparation for the main event of the year – the Inter High meeting. After the Inter High meeting athletes who qualify may be selected to take part in the Junior National championships.
The educator has the responsibility, authority and discretion to enforce the code of conduct in order to create an atmosphere conducive to learning. Should a learner infringe the code of conduct, the educator will follow the set procedure in order to remediate the learner’s behaviour!
