St Andrew's Cathedral School

As an independent, coeducational Anglican school, St Andrew’s Cathedral School is governed by a strong set of overarching principles. Our vision is to inspire students to be passionate, creative learners who engage with the message of Christ and fully develop their gifts and abilities in order to serve in the world. Mission St Andrew’s Cathedral School is a leading city-based, globally connected learning community that seeks to be authentically Christian. Core Values are Seeking to honour and follow Jesus Christ, we will:

  • Depend on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance, to act in conformity to the teaching of scripture as God’s word
  • Exercise Godly virtues such as grace, integrity and justice
  • Emphasise the worth of each person, individually and in community
  • Strive to grow whole people (spiritually, intellectually, physically, in creative expression and in wisdom).

At the heart of St Andrew’s are the people who make it happen. We recognise the worth and individual nature of every student, encouraging and celebrating personal expression. Students at SACS are challenged to engage in unselfish service to others and respond to human need – whether far away, in foreign communities, or on their own doorstep in the city. We seek to develop in students a respect of human freedom and individuality, responsible decision-making and wise, ethical standards and a maturity of spirit that enables physical, social and mental wellbeing.

Our engagement with the city – as well as St Andrew’s Cathedral itself, home to community meetings such as Chapel services and inter-grade assemblies – strives to be meaningful. We are constantly building networks and partnerships with city organisations, be it soup kitchens that serve the homeless, art galleries or legal and business centres. Our Christian worldview seeks to engage students to look at the future with a sense of optimism, to be outward looking and forward thinking, equipping them with the confidence and resilience they need to succeed post-school.

The core values of SACS are embedded into all aspects of life at school – codes of conduct and wellbeing policies seek to ensure each individual is cared for and given the potential to grow and flourish. As a strongly relational school, treating others with grace, integrity and in a context of fairness and justice is fundamental: this happens in relationships between students and staff.

In the Junior School we recognise that learning needs to be significant, challenging, networked and future-focused in order to best prepare students for life in the 21st Century.

We implement the curriculum set by the NSW Education Standards Authority, with whom the school is fully accredited and registered. The school teaches from a Christian perspective in accordance with our vision for teaching and learning. Subjects taught are English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment, LOTE (Mandarin K-6), Christian Development, Creative Arts, and Personal Development Health and Physical Education.

Clear and purposeful learning is intentionally sequenced into the curriculum to reflect developmentally appropriate content. The curriculum is differentiated to meet the wide range of learning needs of the children, from those who require specific learning support to those who are gifted learners and require specific interventions to challenge and extend their learning.

At a time when young people will experience some of their most rapid personal growth and move towards academic maturity, St Andrew’s Middle School provides a purposeful education program designed to engage students from Year 7 – 9 in a supportive learning culture and prepare them for a smooth transition into Senior College and beyond.

Our aim is that learning will be significant, challenging, networked and future focussed, with students engaged and growing every day. The curriculum at St Andrew’s is organised according to the guidelines laid down by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). The MYP framework sits over these guidelines and is also shaped by our SACS Learning Model.

In 2016, St Andrew’s introduced the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), an internationally accredited framework for learning specifically designed for students aged 11 to 16 that caters for their particular learning needs and styles during this stage of life. Students across Years 7 to 10 continue to follow the content of NSW syllabus within the MYP educational framework. The MYP is inclusive in nature, providing for all students, including gifted and talented and those needing support.

The MYP curriculum structure replicates very closely the eight Key Learning Areas of NSW curriculum courses:

  • Language and Literature (English)
  • Language Acquisition (French, Mandarin or Spanish)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Individuals and Societies (History, Geography)
  • Design
  • Arts (Drama, Music, Visual Arts)
  • Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE).

In Years 7 and 8, students study all the Key Learning Areas and Christian Development and then in Years 9 and 10, they will continue to study English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Christian Development, PDHPE and their second language. They will also have a choice of two elective subjects
