Welcome to St Finbar’s Catholic Primary School. Our school mission of “Praising God in every way; in all we think, do and say” helps us all try to give our very best each day.
At St. Finbar’s Catholic Primary school we all work hard together as a team for the good of our children and familiies. It is our vision that by working in this way we are enabling all chldren to realise their full potential while developing the skills required to face new challenges with enthusiasm and confidence.
We aim to: Build on our Catholic foundations to provide a secure and creative environment where all children are nurtured and can achieve their individual potential. To help children to develop a knowledge and understanding of issues affecting their health and well-being so that they can make informed choices for their future. Provide challenging and stimulating learning situations which promote curiosity and initiative and encourage acceptance of responsibility. Build high self-esteem in all associated with our school in order that they will respect and care for themselves and for others. Promote positive relationships between everyone involved with the school, including the local parish church and the wider community. To encourage pupils to maintain high standards of behaviour at all times. To develop enquiring minds, enterprising skills and embrace lifelong learning.
Promoting and teaching a set of core values to our children will educate them to become confident, responsible and caring citizens.
These values are embedded into the curriculum and Teaching and Learning in order to develop social and emotional skills and encourage the children to follow our 3 school rules: Be kind. Work hard. No excuses.
At St Finbar’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to ensure that all children are given access to a rich and varied curriculum which encourages them to read an extensive variety of books and other forms of texts.
We actively encourage reading for pleasure. We want children to enjoy reading. There are comfy areas around the school so pupils can read quietly. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure whenever they have time, but it is also on the timetable.
We have lots of events and activities to engage the support of parents and families, and the wider community, in helping to promote the enjoyment of reading. For example, we celebrated World Book Day – as we do every year. All children across the school were involved. Everyone was invited to dress as their favourite story character on World Book day.
The school has committed to a book-based approach to English and cross curricular planning in which a particular quality text is used as the basis for a whole half term’s work. Every class chooses a child to be reader of the week, to be awarded a certificate in assembly. We have reading ambassadors in every class. Ambassadors meet regularly to express their class’ views on reading and to discuss ways we could celebrate reading as a school.
In KS1, phonics workshops were held to help parents understand how they can help their children to read. Throughout the year, parents are invited into school to enable more children to share reading with an adult and to be positive role models.
Our aim is to equip children not only with the statutory requirements of the curriculum but to prepare them for their role as active, responsible citizens. Our wide range of additional learning opportunities provide an opportunity for the children to learn from other cultures, respect diversity, co-operate with one another and value each individual. We celebrate success and build on disappointment in order to develop resilient young people of the future.
At St Finbar’s, we offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based. A curriculum which: promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
Our Awards: Attendance Quality Mark (AQM), Dyslexia Friendly School, Eco-Schools Silver Award, Inclusion Charter Mark (ICM), Liverpool Counts Quality Mark, Reading Quality Mark (RQM), P4C Philosophy for Children, School of Sanctuary (SoS) Charter, Sun Safe School.
