The wonderful work the children are doing and the activities they take part in, both at Nursery and Key Stage 1, based at our Old Jamaica Road site, and at Key Stage 2, located in Alexis Street.

There is before and after school care provision available. At KS1 this is provided by our in-house club and at KS2 is run by Fit for Sport. Spaces for either of these are limited.

We strive to instill the attitude of being able to communicate our thoughts and ideas clearly so others can understand them as it is one of the most important skills in life. This was one of the most common requests by the pupils at St James', we really care about, and place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of expressing thoughts in a respectful and clear way.

We work hard to help our pupils understand the importance of understanding others, respecting their views, even if they may differ from our own and having empathy and respect for all. As a Church of England school, we explicitly teach and encourage tolerance of other faiths, cultures and customs and celebrate these continuously.

We aim for all of our children to learn at the pace that is right for them and pride ourselves in sending our Year 6 children to secondary school with the basic skills in Reading, Writing, Communication and Mathematics. We believe with a solid grounding in these key subjects, any bars to furture learning, as life-long learners, will be removed.

In our ever-changing world, we encourage children to be confident, proficient and safe when using Computers and the internet. With this contemporary computer literacy, we believe children will be able to use technology to their advantage in a safe, purposeful and enriching way. Children are taught to code and 'de-bug' computer systems to create their own computer programs.

Children should have resilience, determination and the ability to be resourceful in order to meet the challenges and demands we all face in real life. To ensure our children develop their critical thinking skills, we work tirelessly to question in order to stretch their abilities and think about a subject to the greatest depths they can.

We all need to be able to face challenges and know how to adapt to these when presented. We aim for our children to be able to adapt and cope with a variety of surroundings and challenges they may face and to equip themselves with the necessary resources and social and emotional intelligence to do so.

As a Church of England School we are a caring family that offers a stimulating, inclusive and nurturing environment where all children feel safe, cared for and valued. We aim to be a constant pillar of support, kindness and love within the community. At St. James’ we strive to bring out a creative side in all subjects and embrace different ways of learning. Our aim is that our pupils will:

  • Be lifelong learners
  • Be able to take responsibility for their own actions
  • Know the difference between right and wrong
  • Be honest, fair and truthful

We expect the children to be confident individuals, capable of taking initiatives and persevering in the face of difficulty to be lifelong learners and to have:

  • A positive attitude to learning
  • To show concern and care through a strong sense of Christian values for all members of the school community
  • Respect for the feelings of others
  • Respect for the right of others to hold beliefs different from their own
  • Respect for their own and other’s property

We place a considerable emphasis on teaching mental calculation methods and making maths link to real-life as much as possible.

At St. James', we strive to provide engaging and purposeful English lessons, to explicitly teach the skills necessary for reading, writing and speaking and listening making use, where necessary, of a range of Computing and Multimedia skills. We aim to deliver engaging lessons that are both dynamic and interactive. There is a heavy focus on using Talking Partners as part of a wider ethos of collaborative learning.

The children at St James’ are asked to be polite, helpful and kind to adults and each other; to work and play well together and give praise when someone has done well.
