Founded in 1952, Stevenson School is a selective coeducational boarding and day school with 750 students and 30 buildings on 50 acres of land and two campuses. The 500-student upper division, comprised of grades 9-12, is located on the Pebble Beach Campus, where about 60% of students reside in seven faculty-supervised dormitories; the lower and middle divisions, totaling 250 students in grades PK-8, are located on the Carmel Campus.
Whether you are an alum or other old friend of the school, a parent considering our lower and middle divisions for your child, or a prospective student exploring the upper division as the place to bring your talents and dreams, it is a privilege to welcome you to our virtual home. Our community is one in which every day, we all do our best to joyfully mind the gap between what we are and what we wish to be, and to do our world some measure of good as we help each other get better.
As a California school enlightened by a global sensibility, Stevenson (also known as RLS, our namesake Robert Louis Stevenson's initials) is premised on a vision of education as the means by which we discover the world and contribute to its transformation, and the belief that one’s education is best pursued in the company of others, for others’ benefit as well as one’s own. Our Latin motto—Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re (which can be translated as “gentle in manner, resolute in action”)—inspires humility and perseverance. Our mission includes three aims: to prepare students for success in both school and life beyond school, to foster their passion for learning and achievement, and to help them shape a joyful life.
Now as then, to come to Stevenson means to dream big and master the art of the possible; to define and pursue excellence free of perfectionism; to learn how to work well alone and together; to become brave; to stay humble; and to discover that character and wisdom must finally be realized in decisive and often collaborative action.
Across our lower, middle, and upper divisions, our students and teachers are inspired by our core values of safety, trust, respect, belonging, and inclusion. Our community is one in which every day, we all do our best to joyfully mind the gap between what we are and what we wish to be, and to do our world some measure of good as we help each other get better.
Stevenson is a day and boarding community in which students learn to read, write, observe, calculate, research, analyze, innovate, speak, listen, imagine, laugh, collaborate, and dare and, in the process, prepare for the challenges they will encounter in college and the world. This is also a community in which adults, inspired by a sense of shared purpose, work consciously together to model, as often as possible, a collective engagement with life that we wish our students to emulate. In keeping with this mission, Stevenson seeks to:
At Stevenson, we are more than a school: we are a community. It is our fundamental understanding that each child arrives to our community as an entirely unique individual, and it is both our responsibility and our opportunity to learn how that individual processes, grows, struggles, and thrives. The faculty is trained to teach students how to learn, and they, in turn, are expected to pursue their own expertise in teaching learning throughout their tenure.
Our academic program guides students in the acquisition of conceptual knowledge and habits of mind that are essential for them to thrive, whatever their future direction. Our teachers are committed to ongoing examination of not only what they teach but, more importantly, how and why they teach it. The student experience is at the heart of everything we do here, of every decision we make. In addition to challenging students with traditional subjects, we also pay attention to a broader range of essential skills. For example, at Stevenson, we don’t assume that adolescents innately know how to lead: leadership is a learned skill that develops through mentorship, experience, and reflection. Stevenson helps students nurture such skills through summer programs and extensive training that empowers them to have a positive impact on those around them and the spaces they share. Our boarding program promotes the development of cultural competency skills that are essential in our interconnected world. Stevenson School is a community populated by residents from 17 states and 23 countries; we, therefore, strive to create classrooms and living spaces that embrace empathy, curiosity, and the importance of a sense of belonging.
