Success is Being Your Best Self: Leadership Insights from Mr. Lee Phillips

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Mr. Lee Phillips, the Head of School at SBS International School Chiangmai, to gain insights into the school’s vision, challenges in education, and strategies for student success. Mr. Phillips shared his thoughts on various aspects of education, including academic focus, student engagement, inclusivity, student well-being, post-graduation preparation, and teacher development.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

In 2025, SBS International School Chiangmai will continue its goals to provide innovative, international education. We are introducing new technology-based learning tools to further enhance our curriculum and ensure our students are prepared for a rapidly changing world. We also plan to expand our professional development programs for teachers, focusing on cutting-edge teaching methodologies as well as sharing best practice in assessment and student engagement. We are committed to strengthening our Wellbeing initiatives to support the health and resilience of not only our students but also staff and parent community. Facilities upgrades, including a new multi-purpose innovation hub, will provide an environment that nurtures creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Our academic focus each year is guided by data-informed insights, feedback from our community, and global educational trends. We aim to balance traditional academic rigor with the development of 21st-century skills. This year, we are pursuing initiatives in STEAM education, experiential learning within our Cambridge programme, and the exploration of artificial intelligence in classrooms. By collaborating with staff, students, and parents, we identify key areas of growth and innovation, ensuring our curriculum remains relevant and impactful.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

Over the next five years, I anticipate challenges such as adapting to technological advancements, addressing disparities in access to quality education, and maintaining student engagement in an increasingly digital world. Mental health and Wellbeing will also remain critical areas requiring attention. At SBS International Chiangmai, we are preparing for these challenges by fostering adaptability, investing in teacher training, and building a robust support system for our community.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

Engaging students begins with understanding their unique needs, interests, and learning styles. We use differentiated instruction, hands-on activities, and real-world applications to make learning meaningful. Our teachers are trained to recognize and support struggling students, while our Wellbeing team provides additional resources. We also encourage student voice and choice in their learning journey, fostering a sense of ownership and motivation.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of SBS International Chiangmai. We celebrate diversity through our curriculum, events, and daily interactions. Our Homeroom care system ensures every student feels valued and supported. Equal access to resources, tailored learning plans, and a commitment to reducing barriers empower all students to thrive academically and personally.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

At SBS International Chiangmai, student Wellbeing is paramount. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bullying, coupled with preventive education programs that foster empathy and respect. Our Wellbeing team conducts regular workshops and offers counseling services to address stress and mental health concerns (also digital monitoring through the use of the Komodo platform). Proactive communication with parents and ongoing teacher training ensures a supportive and safe environment for all.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

We prepare our students for life beyond school by emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. Career guidance is delivered by our experienced University Counsellor, whereas internships, and real-world projects help bridge the gap between academics and practical application. We instill values like collaboration, resilience, and global citizenship, equipping students to succeed in an interconnected world.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

Parents and the community are integral to the success of SBS International Chiangmai. We maintain open communication through regular meetings, surveys, and the use of online channels such as EduPage and Class Dojo. Parent-teacher relationships and community partnerships play an active role in decision-making and school initiatives. Together, we create a vibrant, supportive environment that benefits all stakeholders.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

We foster a culture of respect, collaboration, and professional growth. By providing competitive benefits, ongoing training, and a supportive work environment, we ensure our teachers feel valued and motivated. Recognizing and celebrating their contributions further enhances job satisfaction and retention.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

Absolutely. SBS International Chiangmai values the professional aspirations of our teachers. We offer leadership training programs (Cambridge PDQ), mentorship opportunities, and pathways to advance within the organization. Teachers are encouraged to take on roles that align with their skills and interests, fostering a sense of achievement and contribution.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

All after-school activities contribute to a well-rounded education. These initiatives teach students to think strategically, work collaboratively, and develop a growth mindset—skills that are invaluable in any future endeavor. Whether a student is consolidating their English language ability or developing new programming skills, the ECA (extracurricular activity) programme ensures that all future goals are supported in an engaging and purposeful way.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

Success, to me, is creating an environment where every student and staff member feels valued, supported, and empowered to achieve their full potential. Success is being the best person you can be. It is reflected in the academic, personal, and professional growth of our community, as well as in the positive impact our students make in the world.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

Opportunities will come in every stage in life, success in academic and social education is making sure you are ready for those moments when they appear for you.
