Success Through Reflection: Robert Cody’s Holistic Approach to Education

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Mr. Robert W. Cody, Head of School at Mont’Kiara International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Mr. Cody is passionate about creating a learning environment where every student can reach their full potential. In this interview, he shares his insights on the future of education, the importance of student engagement, and the role of teachers in fostering a positive school culture.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

We plan to continue celebrating Mont’Kiara International School’s 30 years of excellence while building on the foundation of success we’ve established. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on the school’s achievements, refine our practices, and focus on growth to meet the needs of every student.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and what new ideas are you pursuing?

Our focus is guided by data, which we gather through assessments, feedback from students, parents, and teachers, and observing each student’s learning journey. This data helps us identify areas to celebrate and areas for growth at Mont’Kiara International School (M’KIS). By listening closely to the M’KIS community, we can pursue innovative practices that support both academic progress and personal growth.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

Educators do not see challenges; we see opportunities. AI, for example, presents a tremendous opportunity to rethink education’s focus. A child born today will grow up in a world where AI is a powerful tool, but they will not need to compete with it. Instead, our focus will be on helping students develop essential human skills—like ethics, collaboration, inquiry, and connection at Mont’Kiara International School (M’KIS). Knowledge was once held by an elite few; today, it is accessible to all. Our role is to teach students how to engage with that knowledge in meaningful and ethical ways.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

Building strong connections and relationships is key. When students feel seen and supported, they’re more likely to engage. Success, no matter how small, motivates further effort. The teachers at Mont’Kiara International School play a vital role by setting just the right level of challenge—pushing students to achieve more than they thought possible while celebrating every step forward.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

We hire teachers who went into education to make a difference in students’ lives. Mont’Kiara International School’s core values—kindness and belonging—are shared with all students, and we hold ourselves accountable to these values every day. Programs like the school’s buddy system, as well as intentional efforts to welcome new families, ensure that every student feels they are a valued part of our community.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

Mont’Kiara International School prioritizes a culture of mutual respect and support, where success is measured not just by individual achievements but also by how students contribute to each other’s growth. By fostering a sense of community through daily interactions and shared goals, we actively address stress and bullying, ensuring that every student feels valued and supported. When all students are treated with dignity and respect, we model behaviors that negate bullying and hold everyone to that standard, creating an environment where kindness and empathy thrive at Mont’Kiara International School.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

Success after graduation looks different for every student. For many at Mont’Kiara International School, success will mean choosing the right university and excelling in their next phase of life. Our students are not only prepared academically but also socially and emotionally to approach the next stage with confidence, resilience, and a willingness to keep moving forward—whether they encounter setbacks or celebrations.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

Mont’Kiara International School (M’KIS)’s parents are deeply involved in supporting the school. Their active presence on campus—engaging with teachers, staff, and other families—creates a vibrant and welcoming community. The leadership team at M’KIS values open communication with parents because we all share the same dream: helping every student reach their potential and prepare for a life of challenge and success.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

There are four key aspects of daily school life that make a difference for teachers: collaborative colleagues, supportive parents, hardworking and kind students, and an administration team that values and supports them. Mont’Kiara International School works hard every day to maintain this culture. It’s something we never take for granted, and we believe it’s what inspires teachers to stay and thrive here year after year.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

The leadership team at Mont’Kiara International School actively seeks opportunities to help teachers gain leadership experience. Many of our current leaders were hired from within the community, reflecting the strength of our team and our commitment to growing from within. Through both curricular and extracurricular roles, teachers have many chances to explore leadership and develop professionally.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

All after-school activities offer students opportunities to grow. Whether a student deepens a passion, discovers a new interest, or learns that something isn’t for them, every experience is valuable. These activities help students build confidence, develop skills, and gain insight into their own interests—each of which is a success in its own way. With this belief in mind, Mont’Kiara International School offers a wide range of after-school activities, from community services and interest-based programs to sports.

12. As a Principal, what is your definition of success?

True success is when a person understands that through learning, reflection, and hard work, they can grow, make a difference in the world, and live a fulfilling life. This is a goal at Mont’Kiara International School, and every mentor, and parent. When we achieve this, the world opens up, opportunities become endless, and hope takes over. That is success.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

Learn, reflect, work hard, grow, make a difference, and enjoy life—the age of hope is yours.
