Thornwell School is a great place to learn. Our building has a new Foundation Phase department with plaza style classrooms. The school has a 100 meg broadband connection that enables our 'state of the art' IT equipment to enhance children's learning opportunities.

We have beautiful school grounds with lots of trees, a vegetable patch, outdoor learning lodge, poly tunnel and a wildlife area with a pond full of amazing creatures. Our dedicated staff provide a wide range of extra curricular clubs during lunch times and after school. Wrap-around care is provided with a free breakfast club.

Our Vision is for Thornwell to be a safe place where success follows happiness. A place that children love attending because learning is challenging, modern and fun. The school will welcome and nurture everyone, with equity and without prejudice. At Thornwell children will learn about their place within Wales and the world, and the importance of their role in looking after it.

Thornwell Primary School embraced the opportunity to join Monmouthshire’s first Primary Alliance in September 2014. Mrs Edwards, the substantive Headteacher of Shirenewton Primary, took on the role of Executive Headteacher of the Chepstow Primary Alliance. The Chepstow Primary Alliance consists of three primary schools in the Chepstow Cluster - Thornwell, Pembroke & Shirenewton. Thornwell and Pembroke schools each have substantive headteachers and Shirenewton has an Associate Headteacher. The Headteacher of Thornwell, Tim Appleby, is responsible for the school's day to day leadership and management. The Headteacher, the heads of Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 and the Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALNCO) make up the Senior Management Team of Thornwell Primary.

All children are encouraged to reach their full potential. As a school we foster children’s ability to think independently and creatively, developing skills they can transfer between all areas of the curriculum. The children engage in group activities which encourage discussion, negotiation and positive working relationships. Children are encouraged to develop a range of transferable skills, through problem solving activities. They are taught about the variety of methods that enable individuals to become effective learners. Time is provided for children to reflect on their particular learning styles and how they can improve. We build from the principle that when happy, effectively motivated and appropriately challenged, all learners will develop and succeed. Our classroom environments, alongside the range and quality of opportunities provided, ensure children become effective and confident learners.
