10 Time Management Tips for Teachers

At the beginning of every school year, there seem so many things to do for teachers. From preparing lesson plans, to scheduling activities, and meeting with the school administrators – they have countless tasks that need to be done. Being organized from the start of the school year is important to stay on top of these tasks.

Here are some tips that may take time to prepare but will definitely help teachers get through the whole academic year.

1. New Year Checklist

You can create a classroom checklist to help you in preparation and set-up. Try to start typing a list from the start of the school year. Then, you can try other things on the checklist like making a class design & set-up, resources & books, and other things you can’t miss.

Check off your list all the items that are done. It will give you a sense of accomplishment each day and focus on the next ones in the following days.

2. Labels and student names

Make labels of your students names and print a lot of copies. You’ll never anticipate how printing your students’ names on labels ahead of time can save you a lot of time and effort! You never know when you might need these.

3. Student Numbers

You can use these numbers on your students’ workbooks, folders, supplies, and other things.

Numbers are much easier to remember than names. You can use it to get your students to line up in that order and call through numbers than names.

4. Class List

Keep a handy class list. Prepare them ahead of time and you’ll be surprised how much it will help you. You can put it aside work that is completed. You can easily check off student names as they return home from field trips. This saves you time searching for one when you need it most.

You can use it to record scores, assignments, and projects.

5. Get organized

First, allot an area for school supplies in your classroom. Get your classroom organized and you’ll see how it will affect your student’s learning.

Make sure to put anything else you’ll be using in that area. If you’re teaching math, you can include math activities, lesson plan, and math workshop schedule.

You can also create a WOW work bin for great projects submitted by students and put them later on in a portfolio. When you’re organized, you’re setting an example for your students to also be organized. You can also assign them classroom jobs such as the librarian, messenger, helper, paper monitor, etc.

Teachers must have a plan ready for the first day of school. Decide which strategy you’re going to use and research methods on how you’ll do it. Lay out all the classroom rules and make sure everyone follows them.

7. To-Do Lists

Aside from the yearly checklist, narrowing it down to a daily, weekly, or monthly checklist will be very helpful. You can attach it next to your desk or calendar. Here are some things you can include on your daily to-do list:

  • check student work
  • stack chairs
  • sharpen pencils
  • hand-out morning work
  • mark math work

Weekly to-do list:

  • photocopying
  • prep materials
  • meet with _____

Monthly to-do list:

  • hang out books on a bookshelf/
  • unit planning
  • plan assessments
  • monthly newsletter

8. Prepare in advance

Choose a day of the week to get all things done for the whole week and stick to it. Preparing in advance is always better as you never know what may happen during the following days. Eventually, you’ll find more time to do new things!

9. Early Finishers

Extra work for fast finishers and review activities can be prepared ahead of time. Keep your students busy by giving them activities such as puzzles, whiteboards, books, and math activities.

10. Make & Save samples

Make great work samples and save them. You can use these things the following year as a showcase of the best work. These samples can be used in the future years, which you can show to your students while teaching.
