At Tiwi College we have students from all communities on the Tiwi Islands bringing with them a strong Tiwi culture and language. This is a unique gift to our college as it creates a school climate of mutual respect and support for each other.
Pickataramoor is located on the south eastern aspect of Melville Island. Students from the three major communities of the Tiwi Islands, namely, Wurrumiyanga, Pirlangimpi and Milikapiti choose to be educated here. The closest community is 45 minutes away, during the dry season – much longer in the wet!
We have an outstanding attendance rate and excellent retention rate, giving testimony to the type of schooling and caring environment we offer. We also have a stable staff which helps build continuity for our students.
Our school is 12 years old Tiwi language and culture is very important to us. This is a unique gift and it helps us build our school climate of mutual respect and support for each other. We pride ourselves on our ability to care for the well-being of our students. This is an attribute of our school that is difficult to measure but certainly one you feel as you walk through the school and meet our students. Where possible we employ Tiwi staff to ensure that the strong linguistic and cultural link is strengthened for our students, and Tiwi staff are also as role models for young adults.
Ours is a secondary boarding Christian Independent College with a difference. Each Monday, students are bused in, and they live in Family Group Home situations within a family environment. On a Friday afternoon, students are dropped off back into their communities. We focus strongly on the holistic person. Our Family Group Homes provide the social foundation, our Academy provides the sport and cultural foundation and our Academic team provides the academic focus. Our aim is to remain faithful to the dream of the Founding Fathers in ensuring that every student has an aspiration to become a valued contributing member of the Tiwi community. Thus begin by focusing on Literacy and Numeracy with the goal of all our students leaving here at the end of their schooling with the necessary skills for living and working productively on the Tiwi Islands and indeed in any global environment.
