Education in Lebanon is overseen by the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education. Lebanese children are required to attend school from age 6 to 14. Upon completion of primary and middle education, students will enter secondary school wherein they will choose from among three options – literary, scientific, or technical/vocational. Usually, their teachers and the results of their Brevet examination influence their decision. In their third year of secondary school, students who have chosen literary and scientific tracks will take an assessment test leading to Bac II or Lebanese Baccalaureate. Meanwhile, students who have chosen the technical/vocational track will take an assessment to acquire the Technical Baccalaureate. Successful students with the proper baccalaureate degrees may proceed to college in one of the 41 higher education institutions in Lebanon.
The school year in Lebanon typically starts in mid-August and ends on the third week of May of the following year. There are breaks during the fall (mid-October to first week of November), winter (third week of December to first week of January), and spring (last week of March).
