For most of its first 100 years the University was situated in the centre of Christchurch (now the Arts Centre). By 1975 it had completed its move to a spacious purpose-built 76 hectare site in the suburb of Ilam, 7km from the old city site. When established in 1873, Canterbury College, as the University was originally known, was only the second university in New Zealand. Housed in graceful stone buildings on a central city block, it was dependent for survival on rents from high country farms with which it had been endowed by the Canterbury Provincial Council.

It was set up on the Oxbridge model with one major difference: women students were admitted from the start. An early graduate, Helen Connon, became the first woman in the then British Empire to win honours.

Ernest Rutherford, Canterbury’s most distinguished graduate, studied at the University in the 1890s. He discovered his own scientific ability during a year of postgraduate research before taking up a scholarship to Cambridge. A contemporary of Rutherford, Apirana Ngata of Ngati Porou, was the first Maori graduate from any New Zealand university. The portraits of these two men, respectively, grace the nation’s $100 and $50 bank notes.

For most of its first 100 years the University was situated in the centre of Christchurch (now the Arts Centre). By 1975 it had completed its move to a spacious purpose-built 76 hectare site in the suburb of Ilam, 7km from the old city site. It comprises a central complex of libraries, lecture theatres, laboratories and staff accommodation surrounded by playing fields, woodlands and the renowned Ilam Gardens. On 1 January 2007, the neighbouring Christchurch College of Education, the second oldest teachers' training college in New Zealand, merged with the University and became UC's sixth College/School.

The University of Canterbury has transformed my son's academic journey; the exceptional quality of education and dedicated staff have sparked his passion for learning in remarkable ways!

Graduated in 1994. Fantastic experience all round. Loved my lecturers, course content and loved my particular degree. Great social atmosphere. I’ve now had 2 grown up daughters enjoy Canterbury as well.

As a alumni of the University, I can only speak highly of my time here at UC. With world-class courses, staff who are passionate about their subjects, and a great atmosphere on campus, the University of Canterbury rightly deserves to be ranked as one of New Zealand's best.

University of Canterbury is a great place to study with lots of course options and fantastic staff. However; as always experiences depend on your subject(s) of choice and how hard you try. If you don't put in the effort you won't make it. Some courses certainly don't warrant a entire course simply because they lack content and don't teach you much past getting you points for a degree - so as always make sure you pick carefully and balance your workloads (be sure to talk to your departments course advice - as they really are awesome!)

University of canterbury is best university. I have seen students getting placed at very good places after studying from here, I believe it's all just because of dedicated mentors and perfect curriculum .

Canterbury is a beautiful university but just like outward appearances its whats inside that matters. Your experience depends on the course you pick. After completing my degree I can say only 20% of the lectures/courses actually provided me the proper understanding of the materials. The rest were miss-leading and sometimes a waste of time...
