Located on the West Bank of the Mississippi River minutes from downtown New Orleans, the University of Holy Cross is one of the South's most unique educational experiences.
The University was founded in 1916 as Our Lady of Holy Cross College, a Ministry of the Marianites of Holy Cross, and was created to educate and prepare teachers for work in the many schools the Marianites were opening across South Louisiana. The University's continued unwavering connection to the beliefs of the Marianite Sisters and its roots in educating those who would eventually teach others are both part of the foundation that makes the UHC experience so special.
For our students, this means smaller classes, a faith-based atmosphere and more personal attention from a generous, responsive team of professionals. It means collaborating in an exciting, entrepreneurial environment where the focus is always excellence. It means the support of a compassionate, caring faculty and staff all dedicated to making sure you get the most out of your educational experience. Ultimately, it means you leave the University of Holy Cross prepared for life.
The University of Holy Cross is a unique Catholic institution of higher learning founded by the Marianites of Holy Cross. Rooted in a belief in human dignity, the University of Holy Cross educates the minds and hearts of its students. The University is centered on effective and innovative teaching, intelligence exercised across disciplines, practical reasoning, and communication with others. All members of the University strive for excellence and contribute their knowledge and experience in their chosen work, community, and ultimately the world in need.
We believe that education flourishes in a community motivated by a Catholic Christian vision, Gospel values, and a commitment to the education of the total person. We accept the responsibility to respond to the needs of our students by challenging and empowering them to develop holistically in the attainment of knowledge, skills, and values necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.
As UHC approaches its centennial, there is much to celebrate. We offer leading academic programs in Nursing, Counseling, Education and many other disciplines. We're working to establish our second doctoral program in Education. Our graduates-4,500 strong-distinguish themselves as top-notch professionals throughout the region. We have new academic programs and innovative ways to learn in the works.
UHC was founded by the Marianites of Holy Cross and prides itself in its mission to educate the hearts and minds of our students. Small classes and caring instructors aid us in fulfilling that mission. We offer two doctoral degrees, seven master’s degrees, twenty-two bachelor’s degrees, and six associate’s degrees—thirty-seven in all. Multiple concentrations and tracks within degree programs expand the offerings even further.
Teaching and learning is aided by an outstanding faculty and reinforced through a wealth of support services. The Center for Teaching and Learning, the Blaine S. Kern Library, the Office of Student Life, Campus Ministry, and the Thomas E. Chambers Counseling and Training Center are prime examples of that commitment. In conjunction with our latest accreditation review by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the University has opted to expand its support services through a quality enhancement plan for writing in the disciplines titled, Let’s Write, Right. Its overarching goal is to prepare all students graduating with a baccalaureate degree to enter their professional careers with the communication skills needed for success and advancement.
Financial Aid staff members are dedicated to helping students in the pursuit of their educational goals by providing financial information and services in a professional and individualized manner. The Financial Aid staff exists to help students seek, obtain, and make the best use of all available financial resources.
