In 2002 the Ministerial Council, chaired by Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Simitis, decided to found the University of Western Macedonia, and published the Presidential decree No. 92/11-4-2003. In June 2003 the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Mr Petros Eythymiou, under the decision Φ.120.61/132/61865/Β2/25.6.2003, appoints the members of the Administrative Committee in Kozani. On 28 July 2003 a group of ministers leaded by the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Petros Eythymiou settles the Administrative Committee in Kozani.
The main intention of the University of Western Macedonia through offering the Lifelong Learning Courses is to assure the increased needs of the Greek society for training, learning and specialization, especially nowadays.
The Lifelong Learning Courses offered by University of Western Macedonia operate within a framework that guarantees a high level of education compatible with the role of a public university, as well as the effectiveness. Our university has both the scientific manpower and the proper infrastructure required to offer high quality education services to a wide range of people in the country. The majority of the courses offered are taught by Faculty Members from different departments of the University or by independent instructors.
UOWM is holder of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education. The Erasmus+ Program aims to support actions in the fields of Education, Training, Youth and Sport for the period 2014-2020. Erasmus+ encourages individual mobility, transnational partnerships and alliances to foster cooperation between organisations and institutions and to stimulate knowledge and innovation in the field of education, training and youth. The new action of sport will support grassroots projects and cross-border challenges such as combating match-fixing, doping, violence and racism.
The responsibilities of the Research Committee are focused on managing research programs and the formulation of research policy at the University of Western Macedonia. In this context, the Special Account for Research (ELKE) inform the faculty of the University for possible funding sources, encourage the submission of proposals for specific research projects, directs and guides the University staff on financial procedures and the discovery research resources.
