The Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya with its headquarter at Pundibari (Coochbehar) started functioning on and from 1st February, 2001 for the development of agriculture and for the furtherance of the advancement of agricultural education, prosecution of agricultural research and extension in the eight northern districts of West Bengal.

The University took birth through bifurcation from the Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya. The University has three degree programmes covering Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Engineering disciplines along with the post graduate programmes in every discipline of Agriculture and Horticulture Faculties. The implementation of IVth Deans’ Committee Recommendation in case of rules, regulations and syllabi in UG & PG is overwhelming and praiseworthy. The Vth Deans’ Committee Recommendation for degree courses has been started from the academic year 2016-17. The University is fostering collaboration with Indian and foreign individuals and organizations for the purposes of better teaching and research prospects.

The Head-Quarter is situated at Pundibari, a rural block in the district of Cooch Behar (with 43 m MSL) which is 15 KM away from the district head-quarters. The nearest railway station is New Cooch Behar, which lies in between Kolkata and Guwahati train route. It is 14 KM from Pundibari and 6 KM from Cooch Behar town.It is situated by the side of the highway (NH 31) which leads from Cooch Behar to Siliguri. The nearest airport is Bagdogra which is 184 KM away from the University Head Quarters.

The University, Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya is contributing to the overall agricultural development of the state, West Bengal by way of developing quality professionals in the niches of Agriculture & Allied Sciences, conducting demand driven research, fine tuning technologies and capacity building of farmers to facilitate socialization, besides providing consultancy and advisory support to the farmers, Government, NGOs & other organizations involved in the agricultural development. It has efficiently dealt and is dealing with the local problems of agricultural production system in different agro-climatic conditions of northern part of West Bengal through research and development. In addition to that the University is focusing to improve the livelihood of farmers and to commercialize farming as a profitable business, besides producing farm graduates after moulding them with self confidence and innovative thinking to meet the national and global needs.

The University has a Central Library at the main campus at Pundibari. There are also unit libraries at other academic establishments and Regional Research Stations of the University. E-Journal Consortia, CABI Abstract with full text article, on-line journals, reference books, textbooks with sufficient numbers, Indian journals, CD ROM Database and soft copy of books are available at central and unit libraries.

Computer with internet facilities are available in each department. Various course in Computer application and Science are offered under the Department of Agricultural Statistics and Faculty of Technology. Besides these there is a Students Computer Center for use by the students of all Faculties.

University has a well-developed workshop facility under Faculty of Technology for the course of B. Tech in Agricultural Engineering. This workshop has all the instruments/equipment related to Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering.

Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya has a fairly well-developed Agricultural Experimental Farm of about 300 acres at Pundibari, Cooch Behar, West Bengal. The farm is treated as laboratory to the scientists and students. The University farms, apart from regular teaching, research and extension activities, its vast remaining areas in 11 units distributed over North Bengal is utilized purposefully for farmers service through production of quality seeds and arranging farmers’ training under the supervision of scientists and technologists with the objective to take part in the process of transformation in agriculture in the area.
