XCL World Academy: Preparing Students for the Future of AI and Beyond

Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Tammy Murphy, Head of XCL World Academy, to gain insights into her vision for the future of education and the academy’s innovative approach to preparing students for the changing world. She is committed to providing students with an exceptional educational experience that empowers them to thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

1. What are your plans for 2025?

The focus will be on integrating emerging fields like AI, eSports, and digital and creative media into education. This will equip students with future-focused skills that are critical for navigating the digital economy. The approach includes the use of adaptive learning platforms, virtual reality experiences, and coding curricula to enhance engagement and mastery of complex concepts.

2. How do you decide what to focus on academically each year, and which new ideas are you pursuing?

Our approach to determining academic focus each year is centred on technology, innovation, and real-world readiness. Key initiatives include promoting teamwork and strategic thinking through eSports, and nurturing creativity, design thinking, and emotional intelligence through creative media. Furthermore, schools are creating opportunities for students to engage in real-world problem-solving, entrepreneurial ventures, and collaborative projects that reflect actual business environments.

3. What challenges do you anticipate in the field of education over the next 5 years?

The key challenges in education over the next five years will include navigating cultural differences, adapting to technological advancements, supporting international relocations, fostering real-life skills, and emphasising sustainability and global citizenship. For instance, creating inclusive learning environments and implementing best practices tailored to diverse communities will be crucial.

4. How do you keep students interested in learning, especially those who struggle or seem unmotivated?

Effective strategies for maintaining student interest include personalised learning, fostering an inclusive environment, creating an engaging curriculum, offering real-world applications, and emphasising well-being and personal growth. For example, using adaptive learning platforms, virtual reality experiences, and coding curricula can make learning more interactive and enjoyable.

5. How does the school ensure all students feel welcome and have the same chances to succeed?

The school fosters inclusive learning environments, offers personalised programmes, encourages community engagement, promotes a global mindset, and emphasises holistic development. For instance, personalised programmes like the Foundational English Programme help international students overcome language barriers and integrate into mainstream classes.

6. How proactive is the school in matters of student stress and bullying?

The school takes a highly proactive and comprehensive approach to managing student stress and preventing bullying, prioritising the well-being of every student. We recognise that both stress and bullying can have significant impacts on academic performance, personal growth, and overall mental health, so we focus on creating a supportive environment where students feel safe, valued, and understood.

  • Early Intervention and Support: The school employs a range of strategies to identify and address stress and bullying early. Dedicated pastoral care teams, including school counsellors and wellbeing coordinators, are available to support students who may be experiencing emotional or psychological challenges. Regular check-ins and open communication ensure that no student is overlooked, and those who need help are supported promptly.
  • Mindfulness and Stress-Relief Initiatives: To help students manage stress, the school integrates mindfulness practices, stress-relief activities, and time management workshops into the curriculum. These initiatives equip students with practical tools to cope with academic pressures, social challenges, and personal stresses. In addition, we provide quiet spaces and encourage students to take breaks during the school day, allowing them to recharge and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • Peer Support Programmes: The school runs peer support initiatives, where older students are trained to mentor and support younger students, helping them navigate social pressures and any potential bullying issues. These peer connections foster a sense of community and ensure that students have a trusted person to turn to when they feel stressed or targeted.

By proactively addressing student stress and bullying, the school not only ensures a safe and supportive environment but also helps students develop resilience, emotional intelligence, and the confidence to navigate the challenges of school and life.

7. How do you help students build the skills they need for life after graduation?

The school integrates emerging fields into education, fosters real-life skills, focuses on sustainability and global citizenship, and emphasises holistic development. For example, incorporating technology into classrooms through adaptive learning platforms, virtual reality experiences, and coding curriculums enhances both engagement and mastery of complex concepts.

8. How involved are parents and the community in making the school better?

Parents and the wider community play an integral role in shaping and enhancing the school’s environment. The school actively fosters a strong sense of community by encouraging meaningful and ongoing participation from families. One of the key initiatives is the vibrant Parent Engagement and Connection Committee, which provides families with opportunities to contribute to building a supportive and inclusive school culture. This creates opportunities for shared experiences and meaningful connections, fostering a sense of belonging for all.

Additionally, the school places a strong emphasis on inclusivity and personalisation, ensuring that each student feels valued and supported in their unique educational journey. This approach not only nurtures individual talents but also builds strong connections among families from diverse backgrounds.

Embedding intercultural projects and service-learning opportunities develops empathy, leadership skills, and a commitment to sustainability. These efforts encourage students and their families to embrace differences and collaborate effectively across cultural boundaries creating a more cohesive school community.

9. How do you develop a school culture that attracts and keeps great teachers?

A school culture that attracts and retains great teachers is built on fostering innovation, inclusivity, and advancing academic excellence through holistic development, while integrating technology and emerging skills into the curriculum. For example, at XCL World Academy in Singapore, the focus is on diversity, well-being, academic excellence, innovation, and sustainability. By emphasising personalised learning, student wellness, and transformative educational experiences, the school has successfully established a vibrant, collaborative and creative school community for students and teachers alike.

10. Do teachers at your school have growth opportunities for leadership roles?

Teachers at our school have ample opportunities for growth and development into leadership roles. We believe in nurturing our educators and supporting their professional journey by providing multiple avenues for advancement within the school community.

  • Professional Development Programmes: The school offers professional development programmes designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve their skill sets and take on more significant roles. These programmes include workshops, mentoring, and coaching, which help teachers build expertise in areas such as curriculum design, team leadership, and school management.
  • Mentorship and Peer Collaboration: Teachers are encouraged to take on mentorship roles, guiding newer staff members or leading subject-specific teams. These mentoring opportunities allow teachers to develop leadership skills while fostering a collaborative and supportive environment. Teachers are also given the chance to lead professional learning communities, where they can share best practices and innovate in teaching.
  • Recognition and Support: We recognise and celebrate the leadership contributions of teachers, whether through formal leadership roles or their contributions to school-wide initiatives. This recognition fosters a culture of continuous growth, where teachers feel valued and motivated to continue developing their leadership potential.

By providing these growth opportunities, we ensure that teachers not only advance in their careers but also contribute to the overall success and evolution of the school.

11. Which after-school activity would you say has the biggest positive impact on a student’s future?

One after-school activity that has a significant positive impact on a student’s future is eSports. This activity fosters teamwork, strategic thinking, and technological fluency, which are essential skills for navigating the digital economy. Furthermore, eSports provides students with opportunities to engage in competitive gaming, which can enhance their problem-solving abilities and resilience.

Another highly impactful activity is creative media, which nurtures storytelling, design thinking, and emotional intelligence. It enables students to express themselves creatively while developing skills that are valuable in various professional fields, including marketing, advertising, and digital content creation.

Both eSports and creative media not only equip students with technical expertise but also help them develop real-life skills such as entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and resilience. These activities prepare students to lead with purpose and innovation, ensuring they thrive beyond the classroom and drive progress across industries and societies.

12. As a Head of School, what is your definition of success?

The Head of School believes that success is not just about academic achievements. Success for me is completing our mission of “fostering an inclusive international community of happy learners who aspire to positively impact others”. When we create an environment where students are not only academically successful but also experience genuine happiness in their educational journey then we can say that we have been successful as educators. When students and their families develop a sense of belonging, celebrate diversity, and become empathetic global citizens who strive to improve their community and the world.

13. If you had the opportunity to inspire the world in one sentence, what would that sentence be?

If we celebrate our differences and lead with kindness, empathy, innovation, and a shared commitment to sustainability, we can create a future where everyone thrives.
