This programme will help you to play an important role in creating a thriving learning environment either in the classroom as a learning support assistant, teaching assistant or another related role in this rewarding sector. It will provide the opportunity for professional development, to broaden your knowledge of learning and teaching and develop an understanding of your role and that of the teacher.

Aims

Promote the continuous professional development of those working in a learning support capacity. To improve the qualifications of practitioners and enable professionals employed within the sector to enhance their career prospects. Provide opportunity for those wishing to pursue a career in an educational context, to gain knowledge, skills and experience that will improve their chances of securing employment or promotion within the sector.The curriculum will develop the essential skills of a higher education student, through reading, reflection, research and academic writing
The curriculum will develop skills and knowledge that will provide a vocational route into all phases of education from primary to FE and training, therefore widening the participation of students that would not normally aspire to higher education.

Modules Level 4

  • Personal & Professional Development in Work Related Learning (40 credits).
  • Assessment for Learning (20 credits).
  • Introduction to Planning and Delivering Learning Sessions (20 credits).
  • Developmental Theory: Psychology of Development in Children and Young People (20 credits).
  • Research Methods in Education (20 creditis).

Level 5

  • Career Development (20 credits)
  • Individual Study (40 credits)
  • SEN and Inclusion (20 marks)
  • Classroom and Behaviour Management (20 credits)
  • Influences on the Curriculum (20 credits).

Interview Instructions

Following completion of an application form, applicants will be invited to attend an interview in college with a member of the Education team. Applicants are required to bring to the interview: certificates for all qualifications including GCSE Maths and English.

Entry Criteria

  • UCAS tariff points: 72
  • You will need to have achieved a standard equivalent to grade C or 4, or above, in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics.
  • If you intend to train to teach pupils aged 3 – 16, you must also have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade C or 4, or above, in a GCSE science subject.
  • A minimum of 72 UCAS credits in childcare/education-related course; or NVQ Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 day or equivalent per week as a teaching or learning support assistant (paid or voluntary capacity) for a minimum of 25 weeks per academic year; or 2 years of recent prior experience working as a learning support professional in an educational context (minimum of 1 day per week.

Non-standard entry criteria

Evidence of significant work experience or employment within the education sector. You will need to be working towards a standard equivalent to grade C or 4, or above, in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics/L2 Functional Skills or equivalent. If you intend to train to teach pupils aged 3 – 16, you will need to be working towards a standard equivalent to a grade C or 4, or above, in a GCSE science subject.
