The University of Salamanca is a Spanish higher education institution, located in the town of Salamanca, west of Madrid, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. It was founded in 1134 and given the Royal charter of foundation by King Alfonso IX in 1218. It is the oldest founded university in Spain and the third oldest European university in continuous operations. The formal title of "University" was granted by King Alfonso X in 1254 and recognized by Pope Alexander IV in 1255. Its origin, like all older universities, was a Cathedral School, whose existence can be traced back to 1130. The university was founded in 1134 and recognized as a "General School of the Kingdom" by the Leonese King Alfonso IX in 1218. Granted Royal Chart by King Alfonso X, dated 8 May 1254, as the University of Salamanca this established the rules for organization and financial endowment.

The University of Salamanca is now 800 years old and with this inheritance received, we are all obliged to give it a new impetus to last at least another 800 years and that is achieved by continuing to do what it has done more research, innovate, hope , imagine and dream ... and open up again to the world as the famous School of Salamanca did with its Right of People. Now is a great time to take that leap forward.

My two daughters study there, 27 years after I did, and they are very integrated in the city, and happy with the University, there will always be things that can be improved, but the level of teaching is still good.

Wonderful architecture, good explanations (could sometimes be a bit more in detail), excellent audio guide, very interesting.

It's beautiful and very old, yes, but it's not exactly what I think of when I hear tourist attraction. It was a very brief sight to see, at it's exactly what you'd expect a university to be...just old. Not saying it was bad, it's just not something I'd recommended to a friend to spend their time on.

I was only here for a brief tour of the university and have not studied there. The architecture is exquisite and it is very interesting to see the old lecture theatres and defense halls. It is a stark contrast to a modern university but with a beauty that is hard to find these.

Very good and old university. The University of Salamanca enjoys prestige throughout Spain and is the oldest university in Spain. The exterior façade of the Major Schools of the University is wonderful. I spent a semester of exchange in the Faculty of Translation and Documentation. The teachers are very committed and competent and the city of Salamanca is cute.
