The University of Reading celebrated the 90th anniversary of its Royal Charter in 2016. The focus of the celebrations took place on Thursday 17 March 2016, which marked 90 years since the Royal Charter was granted on the same date in 1926. Over the decades we have become innovators and pioneers, pushing academic boundaries and leading social change. Founded in the 19th century as an extension College of the University of Oxford, Reading was the only University to be awarded a charter between the two world wars. Upon the granting of the Charter, Dr W. M. Childs became the University’s first Vice-Chancellor and students carried him through the grounds in celebration.
The University of Reading is now recognised as one of the top 200 Universities in the world, and is home to 17,000 students from over 150 countries.
We offer a wide range of programmes from the pure and applied sciences to languages, humanities, social sciences, business and arts. New research and the latest thinking continually feed into our teaching, with our academic staff working at the forefront of their fields of expertise, and we remain one of the most popular higher education choices in the UK.
Our vision for 2026 is that the University of Reading will be a vibrant, thriving, sustainable, global and broad-based institution, responsive to, stimulated by and informing changes in the world around us. As a result, we will also be significantly larger in terms of students, global reach and presence, and revenue.
Our ambition, now and towards 2026, is to enhance our standing as a leader in research and higher education that defines and responds to the needs of individuals and societies, and, by so doing, to be counted among the very best universities in the UK and internationally.

I don't feel this University supports long term illness or disabled students that well and actually seems to be a serious lack of communication between students and tutors or understanding on how long term illness can and does impede on a person's life. They have to stop seeing all students as a collective norm and understand some are struggling on the fringes. After really expensive studies which my daughter has taken considerable time to study with years of repayment a head this isn't brilliant and feel let down because we were assured at the beginning when visiting this University it did in fact support this vulnerable group.

I went here for a four day metrology taster course/ work experience, which was very useful, interesting and beneficial for me! Very funny and friendly staff in the department from the professors and staff to the students studying there.
The trip definitely sold reading to me as a uni choice! Great campus and wonderful atmosphere. Lucy (third/final year, maths degree) the student ambassador was very entertaining and sold the university to us very successfully. A credit to the university!
The facilities are very good and access to them seems excellent. Cafeteria is impressive and generally the whole university seems brilliant. A world class meteorology department with great links to the ECMWF and the atmospheric observatory is excellent!

I studied at the Centre for Applied Linguistics in 1994. I specialised in Materials Development. I must say that I really appreciate the type of strong and consistent training I received. In fact this training helped me a lot when UCP selected me for its project aimed at developing a 7-level course for Senegalese students: STAY TUNED for SENEGAL. I strongly recommend this University and my first British College, Marjon, now University of Plymouth.
Good luck to all students presently studying there.

Fantastic university. Great staff. Lovely well-kept campus. Excellent facilities. Recommended for prospective university students in pretty much any discipline. I can personally vouch for the quality of teaching in the Philosophy Department.

As universities go, Reading has a lovely campus that is quite nicely centralized. There are quite a few very well-regarded departments as well, such as Archaeology, Systems Engineering, Agriculture and Philosophy. Sadly, from the look of most of the building work here, the focus now seems to be on attracting students to easy, unfocused degree programmes with a view to raise a quick few pounds through the tuition fees. This would make it appear that things are on a decline, which is sad considering the fantastic research that goes on in departments across the board here. While on campus, be sure to check out the Harris Gardens. They are a lovely but well-hidden set of botanic gardens tucked away in a corner near the chemistry building. Hard to find, but well worth the effort!
