St Andrews is a unique and captivating place, and the University is a key part of its charm. Seven centuries of history link the students with the town, leading to the ancient and yet modern institution apparent today. For those interested in visiting or moving to St Andrews, we recommend taking a look at the town information, which describes the facilities and opportunities open to the local community.

The University of St Andrews embraces sustainable development across all of its operations, fully integrating it into all that we do. We have a mission to be recognised locally and internationally as a world-class institution that leads by example, actively implementing imaginative solutions and initiatives that achieve the aims of a more sustainable society. Our three-part strategy to become carbon neutral for energy production:

  • Behaviour change: encouraging reduction in energy consumption such as the inter-hall energy competition in halls of residence which last year achieved savings of 48 tonnes of CO2.
  • Energy efficiency and investment: ensuring highest energy efficiency in the built environment.
  • Micro and macro renewable energy: investing in solar thermal heating on our residential and science buildings, solar photovoltaics (PV) electrical generation and ground source heat pumps on site. Our macro renewables plan will lead to a carbon reduction of 27,000 tonnes per annum through development of the Guardbridge Energy Centre and Kenly wind farm.

Life here is centred around an internationally renowned teaching system, but it is the huge range of additional opportunities only St Andrews can provide which creates the unique experience. Because St Andrews is a small university, students have the opportunity to interact with staff, integrate with each other, and to feel a sense of belonging. They are active in politics, charity fundraising, volunteering locally, and in playing a governance role in how their services are run. We have a centuries-old tradition of bringing the brightest minds around the world to share their ideas. Here, as nowhere else, curious students can meet the best scholars and teachers from around the world, and crucially find the thinking space to question what they are taught.

St Andrews is the most international Scottish university with staff and students from over 120 nationalities. Students from all over the world, and from a wide range of backgrounds, come to study with us, and many find St Andrews becomes a second home to them. We celebrate our student diversity and support many pathways for international students to join us, whether they are applying through an exchange or study abroad programme or for study through our many different degree routes. St Andrews encourages students from different backgrounds to apply and offers a number of scholarships for international students. Studying at St Andrews offers a truly unique experience: you will live and study in the intimacy of a small town, but be surrounded by peers and teachers from all over the world who will cultivate your cultural awareness.

An internationally recognized university hiding in a small fishing town. The University of St Andrews combines high standards with a student experience like none other!

A beautiful university located in a peaceful costal city, very suitable for studying! I really like the long history and wonderful culture of this Uni and the staffs here are very helpful and warm hearted. There are many small sized concerts and I really enjoyed that.

I spent a month her in the summer of 1973. I stayed on campus and enjoyed my entire time here. I took several classes, and learned so much. Loved the golf course restaurant. Loved the town and people

Attended a wonderful Open Day. Beautiful location. Computer studies facilities were amazing and the staff friendly and informative.

The university's main drawback is that it admits plenty of not-very-bright Masters students. They end up writing astoundingly unself-aware reviews like the chump on here who loudly complains about the university daring to start raising its fee levels as it aspires to move towards American levels and then, without thinking there might be a connection between the need for more income and having to satisfy ever-increasing expectations from students, laments that they didn't provide him with the lavish resources, including office space apparently, to which he thinks he's automatically entitled. Let's hope someone with such limited capacity for joined-up thinking doesn't end up being offered a Ph.D. place, eh? Jan 2017

This university is definitely among the top five in the UK. Its known around the world and deserves the reputation it has. I spent a semester there as an Erasmus student and it's an experience I will never forget. Amazing atmosphere, very international and welcoming.

Excellent education on the whole, insanely many international students, a lot of very smart people. As with all universities there are quirks within the university system, especially given the increase in student numbers in some subjects. One major downside to studying so far north, however, is the lack of sun light throughout the winter.

One of the best Universities in the world providing sound learning foundations to grow in knowledge and understanding in the field of interest studied.

Certainly an established institution, from a student experience perspective, St. Andrews leaves a lot to be desired. From enrolling too many students and running out of housing to never being able to find a seat in the library during the semester, it's clear they are shifting toward commercializing education as a commodity for profit, following the example of American schools. In the divinity school, however, some respect for ancient traditions remain, though that includes the dust and lack of basic technology as well (white boards are about as modern as equipment comes for most rooms). To be fair, I'm told the two "lecture halls" they have are out to use by the occasional Undergrad modules, and they seem to have a modicum of basic technology and teaching equipment. Professors are valued for their research, not teaching proficiency (& are tasked with overwhelming administrative duties), so for taught PGs the outlook is grim. My cohort did not even get carrels or dedicated office space so had to cease work based on the unpredictable and inconvenient library hours. I had I not had most of my tuition paid by my American GI Bill as a veteran, I might feel even more upset. A good education, but dismal experience when taken as a whole.
