My love for Basketball by Emaan Kanan (Grade 9 Student)

My name is Emaan Sofian Mohammad Kanan and I am in grade 9. Basketball has always been an obsession of mine which many don’t understand, but I do. Before the age of 8, soccer was actually my favourite sport, and I enjoyed playing it with my brothers. However, that didn’t last very long, for my mother, who played basketball in high school, introduced basketball to my brothers and me. We immediately began playing and my father even bought a basketball hoop to place in front of our house so we could play. I enjoyed the game thoroughly, and I soon began watching professional basketball on TV. Watching professionals play truly inspired me, and I began imitating their moves. I would go outside every day with my older brother to play basketball.

When I was in 7th grade at the International School of Creative Science, I saw the girls in the basketball team competing and winning multiple basketball championships. This encouraged me to work harder, and I set a goal for myself. I wanted to become part of the ISCS girls’ basketball team.

The team’s coach took great interest in me and I became the first 8th grader to join the basketball team. At first, it was quite hard to adapt to the difference in height and age; I was the shortest and youngest player on the team. My teammates, however, welcomed me and made me feel more comfortable. We practiced for a long time together, and slowly our relationship inside and outside the court became stronger.

Although I was on the basketball team, I wasn’t allowed to participate in tournaments because I was too young. This year, however, many tournaments were organized inside and outside the school, and I participated in all of them. In the first two tournaments, I didn’t do very well, for I lacked experience playing against other teams. After that, I was able to lead my team to win the 1st place in a basketball championship against other schools. I was even awarded the ‘Best Player Award’. Later, we won first place against multiple schools within Sharjah.

ISCS has given me the chance to show my talent in the sport that I am most passionate about, and I thank them deeply for that. In future years, I hope to participate in more tournaments and make ISCS known for its female basketball team.

So proud of you Emaan. It’s a very physical sport. A lot of running up and down the court. I played in high school, sat bench a lot because I missed practices due to my job. But you are dedicated, participating in tournaments and pushing yourself to be better. Your passion is notable. No doubt your female team will be recognized. Good work and the best of luck in the future. ❤️?
