Edarabia had the opportunity to interview Fatima Martin, Principal and CEO of GEMS New Millennium School, to discuss the school’s academic vision, leadership approach, and commitment to student success.
My journey into education has been shaped by over three decades of service in the UAE. I arrived in Abu Dhabi in 1995, as a Senior School Chemistry Teacher. Over the years, I have witnessed a complete renaissance in the world of schooling. I have seen education evolve from the simplicity of black chalkboards to the sophistication of today’s interactive digital ecosystems – from traditional face‑to‑face classrooms to the most efficient, innovative remote learning opportunities that ensure continuity, flexibility, and global connectedness.
These three decades have also allowed me to witness, firsthand, how the UAE – and especially Dubai – has been transformed through visionary national agendas. Beginning with the UAE Vision 2020 and strengthened through every successive national strategy, education has consistently been placed at the centre of advancement. This unwavering emphasis on quality, innovation, and future‑readiness has propelled Dubai into the ranks of the world’s leading cities for educational excellence and reform.
As I grew into leadership, I came to understand that leading a school is not simply about administration, but a moral responsibility. It is about cultivating future‑ready learners, empowering educators, and building environments where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
In the GEMS New Millennium School (NMS) community, women’s empowerment is not an abstract idea. It is something I witness every single day. A large percentage of our staff are women, and they are not only teachers and leaders; they are also wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters who carry immense personal responsibilities while leading socially responsible, deeply impactful professional lives.
What inspires me most is how these women manage to balance their home lives, while pursuing continued professional development, and leading from the front in their classrooms, giving rise to numerous successful learners who have gone on to flourish in outstanding global universities and industries.
For me, this is real empowerment:
Women who can stand tall in both their personal and professional identities, who model resilience, lifelong learning, and purpose-driven leadership for every student watching them. Their strength creates a dynamo effect – empowering our girls to dream bigger and our boys to value and respect the power of women who lead with authenticity and excellence.
At NMS, leadership is embedded from Kindergarten all the way to our seniors. From rotational leaderships in kindergarten and primary phases to full-fledged student agency models, and even mental‑health leadership training, we nurture voice, choice, and ownership – allowing students to lead events, drive innovation, and serve the community. Our students engage in international partnerships, experiential programs, debates, STEM challenges, Edupreneurship, publishing books, research papers in leading journals, facilitating workshops for different stakeholders in the community, TEDs speakers and so on.
We strongly believe every young person is a leader – they need the right guidance, opportunities, and encouragement.
“Yes – our school’s model is designed to broaden horizons. Through engineering design challenges like InnoFest, ByteFest, Commercium, Techno Marifa (the innovation stem), entrepreneurial programs, student research, reading platforms, and experiential learning, we help students identify their strengths and unlock future pathways.
We also encourage students to explore diverse domains – from sciences to humanities, from psychology magazines to AI literacy, from global issues to community outreach. This helps them develop not only academic direction but a strong sense of purpose and agency.
Our students pursue a range of subjects from Pure Math in Carnegie Melon University, US, to Law at King’s College London, Technology and Medicine to Finance and Hospitality, to name a few.
My perspective as a woman in leadership has been shaped by a blend of professional experience and personal growth. As a mother raising two wonderful children alongside my career, I have come to deeply value the coexistence of empathy and excellence. The ability to understand people’s challenges with compassion while still approaching problems with clarity, objectivity, and a solutions‑driven mindset has been an advantage.
One of the most affirming experiences has been working with a team that does not view roles through the lens of gender. At NMS, our teachers and leaders look at capability, commitment, and character – not whether a role is “male” or “female.” This culture of mutual respect and equity has empowered me and many other women to lead authentically, without the burden of stereotypes.
I have learned that leadership in times of change demands both resilience and compassion. And this will always remain the cornerstone of my leadership.
Female representation brings diversity of thought, emotional intelligence, relational leadership, and lived experience – all critical for nurturing inclusive and future‑focused school cultures.
Women leaders model possibility for girls, demonstrating that leadership is not defined by gender, but by purpose, competence, and character.
7. How does your school approach inclusion and gender equity throughout the academic year?
Inclusion is non‑negotiable at NMS. It is embedded across policy, practice, and culture. Our systems ensure early intervention, tailored support, and a restorative approach to behaviour.
We also prioritize gender equity – creating balanced opportunities in STEM, leadership, sports, and creative arenas, and ensuring girls have equal access to high‑challenge, high‑opportunity experiences.
This is a quote by Maya Angelou: Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.
So, I say, Believe Boldly, Lead Bravely.
Each one of you has the ability to be an agent of change. Use your voice, your creativity, and your empathy to shape the world you want to see.
To every girl: You are capable, powerful, and limitless.
To every boy: Be an ally – champion equality and uplift those around you.
And to all students: Let’s continue building a world where everyone has the opportunity to shine.
