Algoma University is located in the heart of the Great Lakes in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. With 1,400 students, we are the smallest university in Ontario and the only post-secondary institution in the province strictly for undergraduate students.

Established in 1965 as Algoma University College, an affiliate of Laurentian University, we have been educating the people of Northern Ontario for over 50 years. In 2008, we were granted our charter, becoming an independent degree-granting institution.

We offer over 30 different academic programs, spanning the liberal arts, sciences, and professional disciplines. All of our programs offer undergraduate research opportunities and hands-on learning. Classes are capped at 75 students, even in first year, meaning that you have more one-on-one interactions with our knowledgeable and caring faculty. Our faculty will know you on a first name basis and will work hard to make your dreams a success, both inside and outside of the classroom. Personal attention and a commitment to your success are the cornerstones of an Algoma degree.

As a partner with Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG), we have a special mission to cultivate cross-cultural learning between Anishinaabe (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) populations and other communities in Northern Ontario. Thirteen per cent of our students self-identify as Anishinaabe, and another 23 per cent come from outside of Canada, giving Algoma U one of the most diverse campuses in Ontario. We embrace and foster diversity and value differing perspectives.

Former students of the Shingwauk Residential School formed the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association and have helped guide the development of education on the Shingwauk site. A provincial trust, the Shingwauk Education Trust, gives ownership of a portion of the site to Anishinaabek people, and Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig (SKG) has developed as an Anishinaabek institution for university studies on the site. Algoma signed a Covenant (PDF) in 2006 with SKG to work together for the benefit of all students of Algoma and Shingwauk.

Algoma University is proud to be home to the Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program and Boomer the Thunderbolt. Our student athletes participate in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) conferences, giving them the opportunity to compete in the highest level of sport in Canada.

Algoma University is a excellent school that not only allows you to excel academically but truly grow over the years of your study. The small class sizes not only enables students to connect with professors for a greater learning experience but also allows students to have the ability to seek guidance and have any questions they may have answered. Graduating from the BBA program, I can honestly say that Algoma University as well as the excellent professors have given students a greater advantage when entering the workforce and looking to start their career.

Loved my time at Algoma University in the B.A. English Honours Program. The small class sizes allowed me to receive direct feedback from my professors, main of whom I still keep in contact with. My experiences here helped me to go on and achieve two graduate degrees.

I am currently a 4th year student in the Sociology Program at Algoma University. This program has wonderful encouraging, approachable professors, who provide valuable guidance. I would highly encourage anyone considering this program to take the plunge into this career path, as it opens many doors for long term employment in many areas. Algoma U is a warm and friendly environment and I am looking forward to graduating in 2019.

Algoma university is a great place for seeking a higher education. The music staff was great and always helpful when I needed it. The music program really helped me develop as a musician and prepare for medium and long term educational and artistic goals.

I'll be graduating next year, and I can't stress enough just how awesome the bio program is here! All of the professors are enthusiastic, and engaging, and the subject material is presented in an interesting and helpful manner!

I am in my second year at Algoma University, and I have been given opportunities I never could have obtained otherwise. I am currently working in a research lab in soil ecology, and have a close relationship with most of my professors. It is truly unique to be able to give direct feedback to professors and to not face the intimidation that some bigger universities have. Algoma may be small, but it has a lot going for it, and with a spirited and vocal student body, it can only get better.

Algoma University was the stepping stone that helped me achieve academic success, connect with business communities and peers and led me up a successful path to my career. It was one of the biggest commitment and investment I made when I decided to register for the BBA Program at Algoma University. I will never forget the relationships that I've built with faculty, students and administrative teams. Algoma U is that one family member that you'd look forward to reconnect with again!
