From its founding by Mary Vardrine McBee in 1909, Ashley Hall has remained faithful to its original mission: To produce educated women who are independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence. This mission is realized in everything we do, from campus traditions to our innovative curricula and teaching philosophy. It inspires both faculty and students to engage in a vitally enriching educational community. From boys 2 years to 5 years and girls 2 years to twelfth grade, our curricula, instructional methods, co-curricular programs, and facilities are designed to foster in all of our students, at every stage of their development, those qualities of mind and character implicit in our mission statement.
We acknowledge that the effort towards greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging demands more than a commitment to avoid practices centered in racism and holds as imperative that we actively work to dismantle systemic racism and confront bias and inequalities. We collectively commit ourselves to active learning and listening through an inclusive Learning Spiral, ongoing professional development for faculty and staff, and the emphasis on student experiences which foster connections and deep reflection as a means of cultivating respect and equity in our community. We assert the need to dedicate resources and intentional spaces to encourage a more diverse and culturally-rich community. We acknowledge that our efforts are a work in progress, and as dedicated life-long learners, we pledge our time, talent, and resources to engaging deeply and sincerely in the pursuit of equity, engagement, and respect.
Ashley Hall has developed a teaching philosophy to guide and shape its educational programs and practices which is called The Learning Spiral. Committed to serving the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of each student in every phase of her development and by honoring our mission to “produce an educated woman who is independent, ethically responsible, and prepared to meet the challenges of society with confidence,” Ashley Hall has translated these philosophical principles into our curriculum, methods, and programs from our Early Education Center (co-ed 2 years-5 years) all the way through grades kindergarten to twelve.
