AIS Indonesia was founded in 1996 in response to a demand for inclusive education within international schools in Indonesia. Our founder Penny Robertson accompanied her husband to Indonesia and discovered there was no school that would accept their daughter who has Down syndrome.
With the involvement and support of professional educators, diplomatic and commercial representatives, together with a group of committed parents, Penny and Peter McGuckian set about founding the school’s yayasan on 1st May 1996, and the school opened on 15 July 1996 with an initial enrolment of eleven students and five teachers.
Today, more than 800 students thrive in an environment where they enjoy the benefits of a world-class Australian Education. Two well-resourced campuses offer Preschool to Year 12 classes with specialist support for students with learning difficulties, limited English language proficiency or physical disabilities.
At AIS, we strive for the development of the person as a whole. Academic success is balanced by the school's emphasis on personal growth and development. Our students are challenged and encouraged to discover their individual interests and abilities. AIS teachers are committed to nurturing our students into well-rounded individuals who are confident and creative problem solvers.
The AIS community is based on an extended family of teachers, students, parents and alumni students. Together we celebrate and promote the universal human values that connect us all.
In each of our schools, you will find an international community with a warm, caring and inclusive environment. Our students learn to appreciate diversity and change, and to challenge traditional thinking and to look for new ways forward.
The vision of AIS is for our students to become confident, capable and socially aware global citizens who contribute meaningfully to the communities in which they choose to live and work. Our mission is to achieve this through the provision of high quality, inclusive learning experiences, differentiated to meet individual needs. We support student learning with excellent teachers equipped with up to date teaching materials and technological resources.
Learning takes place in an atmosphere of respect and support where we acknowledge and celebrate our differences and encourage empathy, compassion, understanding and respect for human dignity. Our graduates will have the skills, knowledge, values and attitudes needed to make a positive contribution to the international community.
Our Philosophy
Empowering minds. Uniting Communities
Our key philosophy at AIS is to develop and demonstrate best practice education, and to make a world-class Australian education available and accessible to all children in Indonesia.
Regardless of ability, culture, ethnicity, gender or language background, all AIS students are encouraged and nurtured to achieve their full social and educational potential.
To achieve this, we are committed to providing a challenging, enriching and supportive learning environment, which develops confident and articulate students. Our students are augmented with the skills, knowledge, values and attitudes needed to shape their future and contribute meaningfully to the international community.
The Australian Independent School offers a sensible balance between academic excellence and personal development:
World's Best Curriculum Practice
AIS provides internationally recognised best practice curriculum. The new Australian National Curriculum is taught from preschool age to Year 10 students. In the senior years students complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. AIS graduates have gone on to study at prestigious universities around the world.
International Certification
AIS-Indonesia is accredited through the Council of International Schools (CIS), having successfully achieved accreditation status in October 2015. Successful CIS accreditation means that AIS has met detailed criteria which rate the school to the highest possible standards and as such joined an elite group of international schools around the world. We are very proud to hold CIS accreditation as it highlights the quality and international nature of education provision at AIS-Indonesia and reassures parents that our school has attained independent quality assurance.
Passionate Learning Environment
Through individualised attention and guidance, AIS provides strong academic support to meet each child’s interests and needs. Average class sizes are 18-22 students taught by a fully qualified Teacher and local Teaching Assistant, in addition to a Language Support Assistant and/or a Learning Support Assistant where needed.
AIS is fully committed to “inquiry based” teaching. This approach includes conceptualizing, reasoning, teamwork, problem-solving and a range of other essential 21st century skills.
Passion for other specific interest areas are encouraged through a wide array of extracurricular and community service activities that further challenge students to develop leisure activities and community service.
Inclusivity at Its Finest
The AIS student community is multicultural, consisting of children from over 30 nationalities. Having a diverse community has enabled AIS students to foster strong cultural and global competencies and further supports our mission to graduate respectful, knowledgeable and empathetic citizens.
AIS has become a second home to our families. We welcome everyone regardless of nationality, race, religion, language or learning ability.
