Begin your Canterbury story today.

Our goal is to make the application process as smooth and simple as possible. Just follow the step-by-step instructions below, taking note of all important deadlines to be sure you keep your application on track.

Our application deadline is January 31, at which time all application materials must be on file with the Admission Office. Decisions on completed applications are made available to families on March 10. We continue to accept applications after the January 31 deadline, which are reviewed after March 10 on a rolling basis, if space remains available.

We look forward to helping you along the way and, most of all, we can’t wait to get to know you better throughout our process.

How To Apply

Please Note: We have made our standardized testing and on-campus interview requirements optional for the current and next admission cycles. Please see below for more details and, as always, do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions.

Step 1: Tell Us About Yourself

We pride ourselves on knowing our students well—their interests, aspirations, and areas for growth—both in and out of the classroom. The more we know, the more we can support your journey at Canterbury. To begin the application process, please complete our online inquiry form.

This form will also add your family to our mailing list to receive information and invitations to our open houses and regional admission events. Families with more than one child interested in applying should submit a separate inquiry form for each child.

Step 2: Visit and Interview

A campus visit allows you to learn firsthand about our warm, welcoming and tight-knit community, and it’s a chance for us to get to know you, too! For the health and safety of our community, we will not be offering in-person, on-campus interviews through at least the month of September. During this time, we will continue to offer virtual interviews via Skype, Facetime, or Zoom. Please read more about our on-campus and virtual interview options here.

We recommend scheduling your visit/interview before January 31. Families are encouraged to schedule an appointment early, as appointments fill up quickly.

International Applicants

Due to the high number of applications, we have partnered with Vericant to provide an in-person interview opportunity for all Chinese applicants interested in Canterbury School. Vericant will faciliate interviews and short writing samples with our applicants and the videos will be reviewed as a component of the application. Further details can be found on the International Students section of our website.

Step 3: Submit Your Application

The application deadline is January 31.

Canterbury uses a common admission application for independent schools called the Standard Application Online (SAO), offered through ssat website. We use this material to assess how well you would fit into our school community.

Completed applications submitted by January 31 receive an admission decision on March 10. Applications submitted after January 31 are subject to space availability and are considered on a rolling admission basis.

The application includes the following components:

  • Applicant information
  • Student essay questions
  • Parent statement
  • Current and prior year transcripts (it is recommended to have your transcripts sent after the first marking period of the current academic year)
  • Writing sample
  • Recommendations (standardized forms can be sent directly to the teacher, principal or guidance counselor via the SAO)
    • Current Math teacher recommendation
    • Current English teacher recommendation
    • Current Principal or Guidance Counselor recommendation
  • Standardized test results (see Step 4)

Note: The information submitted to your SAO will be automatically sent to your Canterbury Admissions Portal (created when you submitted the online inquiry form). As the information is received, the items in the checklist will be updated. As we near the January 31 application deadline, it is important for you to check your Canterbury Admission Portal (not your SAO account) to monitor the completeness of your application.

Step 4: Take a Standardized Test

We have adopted a test-optional model for the current and next admission cycles. Please inform your Admission Officer if you will not be submitting a standardized test score with your completed application. If you do not submit standardized test results, your application will be given full and equal consideration; however, please be aware that we may ask for additional information to support your academic achievement.

For some, standardized testing is a strength, and we will happily welcome any scores that students have available and are able to submit. Standardized testing for the admission process depends on the grade to which you are applying:

  • Grade 9, 10 (Third or Fourth Form): SSAT
  • Grade 11 (Fifth Form): PSAT or SSAT
  • Grade 12 (Sixth Form): PSAT, SAT or ACT
  • Postgraduate: SAT or ACT

The preferred time to schedule a standardized test is on the November or December dates. Applicants who take the January exams will still be considered during the regular admission cycle, but only once their test scores are received. We encourage you to register for a test as soon as possible since registration deadlines come well in advance of the test administration dates.

When registering for the SSAT test, please use Canterbury's school code (2050) to ensure the results will be sent directly to our Admission Office. It is important to register in advance at ssat.org.

International Applicants

In addition to submitting the standardized testing listed above, non-native English speaking applicants are required to submit test scores from the TOEFL test (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the Duolingo test. When registering for the TOEFL, please use Canterbury's school code (7219) to ensure results will be sent directly to our Admission Office. A school code is not required for Duolingo.

For applicants who have attended a school for three years or more where English is the primary mode of instruction, the TOEFL or Duolingo test is not required.
