Admissions Process

We are delighted you are looking to enrol your child here at BCS.

We understand the process in choosing the school for you is a highly considered one – and below details the outline of what you can expect throughout the joining process for BCS Prep, BCS Senior, BCS Sixth Form and International Admissions. We look forward to assisting you and your child in the next steps.

Prep Admission

There is a wonderful richness about the education provided by the school, and we strongly encourage all parents to come and visit, with their son or daughter, to see for themselves and discuss next steps.

Prep Admissions Steps
Each section of the school has a slightly different approach to the admissions process, reflecting the different stages children are at on their developmental journey. Whilst entry is supported for a wide range of abilities, we do also have to be confident we have the capacity and resources to support each child’s individual educational needs. These can be discussed when you visit.

Pupils interested in joining BCS are encouraged to come to visit initially Prep School Open Days, which are held throughout the year. A follow up meeting can be arranged when you can meet with the Headmistress, Mrs Karen Wyborn.

Following the visit, you may wish to register your child for a place at the school. A link to the Registration form is below.

Open Days

  • Thursday 17th November , 9.30am – 12noon
  • Thursday 2nd March , 9.30am – 12noon
  • Thursday 11th May , 9.30am – 12noon

Next Steps
Once the registration process has been completed, a Taster Day will be arranged. This allows prospective pupils to meet teachers and pupils, familiarise themselves with the school surroundings and experience a typical day as a BCS pupil.Offers will then be sent out for acceptance.

Senior & Sixth Form Admissions

BCS is a small school, with an intimate community which prides itself on having strong, personal relationships. Small classes sit at the heart of our approach and every pupil is known, encouraged and supported as an individual.

In the last few years, the school has seen a significant increase in interest. To ensure we are able to provide this level of individual focus, and to be confident in our ability to offer the best possible level of support, the entries for September will be through a selection process.

Whilst priority for Year 7 entry will be given to pupils from our Prep School, children of staff and siblings (where one or more is already in the school), all prospective pupils will be required to achieve a certain level of academic performance to be offered a place.

BCS has always supported a wide range of interests and abilities, and this is a true strength of the school. Please rest assured that this will continue to be the case. It is not the school’s intention to replicate a grammar approach to admissions and we will continue to consider all aspects of the entry process. Offers will then be sent out for acceptance in February.

Pupils interested in joining the Senior School or Sixth Form are encouraged to follow the steps as stated below.

Senior and Sixth Form Admissions Steps

Step one: Visit us
Parents considering BCS are encouraged to visit the school. Families can tour the parts of the school that mean the most to them, meet our staff and students and discuss the opportunities available at BCS.

Experiencing the school at work, reviewing the facilities first hand and meeting our staff and students is the best way to understand what a BCS education has to offer you.

Our upcoming Open Days are available in the link below or contact us to make a bespoke appointment.

Step Two: Register
Complete our registration form and return it with the registration fee, copy of your child’s latest school report and passport identity page. If applying for Sixth Form, a copy of your child's latest mock results will as be needed.

This formally registers your interest in a place at BCS.

Step Three: Entry Assessments
In the autumn term prior to admission, students for Year 7 entry will be invited in to BCS to take our admissions’ entrance assessments in English and Maths. There is also a free writing component.

Those looking for Year 8 to Year 10 entry will be invited in to BCS to take the CAT4 assessment and complete a piece of free writing.

Those looking for Year 12 entry will complete the CAT4 assessment and free writing component. Year 12 applicants will also have an interview with Head of Sixth Form and will need to provide their predicted GCSE results and most recent school report.

Step Four: Taster Morning
In Januray/ February, once the registration process has been completed, students will be invited to experience the school through a taster morning for years 7 to 10 students or a taster day for sixth form students. This allows prospective students to meet teachers and pupils, familiarise themselves with the school surroundings and experience a typical day as a BCS student. Students will attend academic lessons and have an interview with the Headteacher.

Offers of your place in the school is released in February.

Step Five: Welcome Day
The welcome day provides the opportunity for students to spend the day in school meeting other students joining BCS in September and getting to know their new teachers and the BCS school environment.

International Admissions

BCS is an all-inclusive and culturally diverse school, where every pupil is valued and respected. We embrace and celebrate all the various nationalities we have join us at the school.

In the last few years, the school has seen a significant increase in interest to join. To ensure we are able to provide this level of individual focus, and to be confident in our ability to offer the best possible level of support, the school has decided that for September entries there will be a selection process.

International students will be required to complete a CAT4 assessment, a short piece of extended writing and where English is a second language a CEPT assessment.

Successful students interested in joining the Senior School are then invited for an interview with the Head of EAL, Mrs Kirsty Sharples.

Offers will then be sent out for acceptance.
