Kindergarten admission requirements
- Admission is usually possible in the month following the child's 3rd birthday, provided there are places available.
- The prerequisites for starting kindergarten are completed toilet training, independent undressing and dressing, independent eating and basic knowledge of the German language.
Admission requirements for school enrollment / admission to grade 1
- In the Federal Republic of Germany, a cut-off date regulates the start of compulsory schooling. For many years, this was June 30th nationwide. It was not until 1997 that the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany decided to extend the cut-off date regulations that had applied until then. Since then, each federal state has been able to set its own cut-off date. Many federal states have changed their cut-off date as a result, while others, including the German School Tokyo Yokohama, have stuck to June 30th to this day. This means that the following rule applies to everyone, including families new to our school, without exception:
- All children who have turned 6 by June 30th of the current year are required to attend school. The prerequisite for admission to the DSTY is that children have attended a German-speaking kindergarten for two years immediately before starting school, and this must be proven. Otherwise, a language proficiency assessment will be carried out by the German as a Second Language Department of the DSTY to check whether the child has sufficient German language skills for starting school.
- Parents of children who turn 6 after June 30th but by December 31st can apply for their child to start school early. In this case, the prerequisite for admission to the 1st grade is successful completion of the DSTY's internal school readiness test.
Admission to school from grade 2
- Admission to the DSTY generally requires that the student is already attending a German-speaking school in Germany or abroad. Admission requires age-appropriate oral and written knowledge of the German language, which may be tested by a language proficiency assessment carried out at the DSTY.
Admission and Enrollment
- The school administration decides on each new admission.
- Once you have been notified that your child(ren) has been accepted, please submit the required forms and documents.
Registration deadline
- We do not have a strict registration deadline, as admission is also possible during the school year.
- As soon as a grade level has reached the maximum number of students, a waiting list is created and you will be notified when a place becomes available. Demand is particularly high in the kindergarten area.
- To increase the likelihood that your child will be accepted, we recommend that you submit your application as early as possible.
