Boarding at St George’s Private Boarding School is special and unlike any other boarding experience in Scotland.

We create a 'home from home' environment for our boarders in which they feel secure within a close-knit structured environment: just like siblings in a large family, housemates of different ages learn from – and support – each other.

All our boarders live in Houldsworth House, a small and friendly boarding house at the edge of the school's private grounds, only a 20-minute walk from the centre of Edinburgh, Scotland's iconic capital city.

St George's School is based in a tranquil parkland setting, with views of Edinburgh Castle, in the heart of the city. Of course, Edinburgh boasts a stunning landscape, a rich cultural heritage, and is a modern vibrant city. It is consistently ranked among the world’s most desirable cities to live in.

As a boarder, you can immerse yourself in all the city has to offer, from vibrant cultural experiences to exciting sports and activities. You will thrive in our environment that nurtures both academic excellence and personal growth.

Although we offer a British boarding experience, we thoroughly pride ourselves on being an international community and love sharing and celebrating each other's customs and festivals. Boarders are usually an equal split of British and international pupils ranging in age from 10 to 18.

We take no more than 50 boarders at one time, so we can always give our full attention to ensure a smooth-running and friendly atmosphere within Houldsworth House.

Full and Flexi boarding

We understand that every family has unique needs, which is why we offer flexible boarding options. We offer full-time boarding alongside weekly boarding or flexible boarding for a few nights a week.

Many girls are full boarders, and well over half are usually on-site at the weekends, enjoying lots of activities on Friday evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays.

As well as benefiting from living in one of the best global cities, our boarders also take advantage of the full range of clubs, activities and visits we provide.

Above all, the independence, self-reliance and confidence that our boarders develop throughout their time with us will prove invaluable for their future moves to university and beyond…

Houldsworth House

Houldsworth House is a place where the warmth of a home and camaraderie blend seamlessly. Our House is two magnificent Victorian properties, connected by a spacious common room that fosters a sense of togetherness. Additionally, we have a modern purpose-built bungalow exclusively for our Sixth Form students.

Our surroundings are serene and attractive, with Houldsworth House nestled among picturesque gardens. In good weather, the girls make use of this tranquil space for games and relaxation. The summer term brings with it delightful barbecues and other exciting events.

Accommodation at St George’s Private Boarding School

We recognise that attending an all-girls boarding school is an exciting prospect and we understand that each girl has unique needs. This is why our bedrooms accommodate varying numbers based on age and preferences.

Junior boarders typically share a room with three or four companions, while many of our sixth-form students enjoy the luxury of a single room.

Our Sixth Form bungalow provides an excellent transition to independent living, equipping girls with the skills they need for university life. Here, they have more freedom to take care of their own laundry, enjoy breakfast at their own pace, and prepare snacks independently.

Boarding House facilities

In addition to your bedroom, there are a variety of spaces where girls can work or relax, play games, or practise the piano. The boarder's common room is a place where you can catch up with your friends at the end of the day, with a television and games and puzzles to enjoy in the evening.

With our own talented chef and a dedicated dining room, at mealtimes girls and staff come together to enjoy breakfast and dinner on weekdays, as well as all their meals during weekends. Girls also have the option of making toast or preparing pancakes and other snacks in the evening, and this can be done in the kitchen which is in the central body of the boarding house, where there are cookers, hobs, and fridges.

The safety and security of our residents are paramount. Entry to all our buildings is protected by a secure access code, ensuring peace of mind for both students and parents alike.

Throughout the House, there are spaces where girls can unwind, while also benefiting from comprehensive internet and computer access.

There is a flat for a member of the resident house staff in each building, enabling us to be near the girls at night.

Life in St George’s Boarding House

Your daughter will always feel at home in our small, friendly boarding house within our private grounds in Edinburgh.

Boarders' involvement in running the boarding house
Empowering our girls is a core principle at Houldsworth House. Led by the elected student Head and Deputy Head of Boarding, they participate actively in the House's operations. From planning the week's menus to choosing soft furnishings, their valuable input shapes the daily life within our walls. They also contribute their skills and ideas to a weekly programme of all-age activities, outings and events, which perfectly complements the extensive co-curricular offerings of our school.

Boarders' Voice
Our boarders have a voice that matters. Regular meetings are held, allowing them to discuss and contribute to the running of the House through student-led committees, with the support of our caring houseparents. These committees, such as the Food Committee, Charity Committee, IT Committee, Eco Committee and Activities Committee, give our girls a platform to make a difference and know that their opinions and contributions are truly valued.

We believe in fostering connections and embracing the bond between day and boarding students. Boarders are encouraged to invite their day girlfriends for meals or even to stay overnight during weekends, just as they would in the comfort of their own homes.
