The Carolyn Hauff Boarding House is located in the old Turrawan Hospital on Sandgate Road opposite the main College Campus. Boarding at Clayfield College started in 1939, eight years after the school was established.
The Boarding House caters for students from Years 5 - 12. Boarding students come from all states and territories of Australia, as well as from overseas. Within Australia, students come from metropolitan and rural areas alike. Our international girls travel from all around the globe, including Asia and the Pacific Islands.
Comfortable facilities, housed within a beautiful heritage listed building, include single ensuited rooms, twin share and dormitory style accommodation, small and large recreation rooms, a study room with 30 computers connected to the school network, a library and music room, craft area and a number of quiet sitting rooms, as well as a prayer room for personal devotion.
Boarders are cared for by friendly, supportive and experienced staff, who are required to have a blue card as well as First Aid and CPR qualifications. Most of the staff also hold a Certificate in Duty of Care. The Boarding House organises a variety of in-house recreational activities, as well as trips to the beach, shopping, theme parks, sporting events, socials and dances. Cultural and charity events provide a connection to our local community.
Our professional chefs provide a varied and plentiful menu, including a comprehensive continental breakfast with one hot dish, packed lunch and dinner with international, Australian and vegetarian options.
The welfare of the boarders is of paramount importance in the Boarding House. The staff is experienced and has a thorough understanding of the needs of modern young women.
It is a priority that we provide an environment that is safe and secure at all times. The Boarding House has a security system that allows the girls to move about the building confident in the knowledge that they are well protected. The Boarding House is alarmed every night and the College also has a 24 hour Security Guard service that monitors the entire campus. Strict policies and guidelines are in place regarding the movement of girls outside of the boarding environment.
All senior staff have a current Senior First Aid certificate and deal with minor medical issues. A medical clinic is held each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, where a doctor will see the students by appointment. A range of services such as medical, dental, orthodontic and physiotherapy is available at nearby Clayfield. Should a boarder require urgent medical attention, a staff member will escort her to the Holy Spirit Private Hospital (Northside) or a hospital, advised by professionals, should an ambulance be necessary.
When boarders first enter the Boarding House they are allocated a "buddy" who will assist them to settle into their new environment. The empathetic support given by the staff, senior students and the "buddies" can help with the inevitable homesickness. Eventually friendships develop, along with a sense of belonging to the boarding community.
Staff are allocated various areas, so that close relationships can be developed with smaller groups of boarders. This inevitably helps in the settling process.
Since 1939, Clayfield College has offered a full boarding experience for regional, rural, remote and international students. Full time boarders enjoy generous leave privileges and a comprehensive recreational program.
We also offer permanent weekly boarding to girls whose families reside in Brisbane or live in regions which are easily accessible to Brisbane. Weekly boarders travel home every Friday after school, returning on Sunday afternoon to prepare for the beginning of the academic week. The Boarding House understands the need for students to live in residence during the week. Parents have peace of mind, knowing their daughters are able to focus on academic, sporting or cultural commitments in a safe and caring environment during the week, whilst still enjoying the home environment on the weekend. Whilst weekly boarders have the option of venturing home every weekend, they are encouraged to remain in residence as often as possible to participate in the recreational program. This option has aided the development of authentic relationships amongst all the boarders, as well as fostering a strong sense of community.
Along with the traditional boarding options we also offer a range of flexible boarding options to assist modern day family lifestyles and commitments. Our Extended Care at Clayfield College offer Daily, Casual and Weekly boarding options to meet the needs of our busy families. Our new Daily Extras includes attendance at afternoon co-curricular commitments or study time in the Learning Resource Centre, dinner and shower in the Boarding House, followed by two hours of supervised homework time with our specialist tutors, before pick up at 9:00pm. Our Casual and Weekly Extras allows our students to stay overnight for one or two nights during the week to focus on study, or on a weekly basis to cater for families with travel commitments.

Students in Years 5 to 8 share small dormitory style accommodation. These dormitories generally sleep between four and seven girls. Years 9 - 11 share a twin room, which includes a desk for private study, whilst the Year 12 students have a single room with ensuite facilities, where available. All sleeping accommodation is fully air-conditioned. All areas of the Boarding House are connected to the College intranet.
A number of small sitting areas and kitchenettes are scattered throughout the building so that the boarders can relax and enjoy quiet times by themselves or with friends. There is a television lounge and a large screen for special screenings of television programs, movies or sporting events. There is also an Xbox Kinect, Wii and gymnasium for the more active girls.
The College provides a comprehensive daily laundry service; however, there are small laundries where girls may launder delicate items.
A Health Centre is located close to Reception so that staff can monitor any sick boarders throughout the day and a larger centre is available where girls can be isolated when necessary. A Registered Nurse, employed by the College, runs a clinic before school each morning.
Other facilities include a Boardroom and attached Kitchenette which are available for meetings, a small library, and a music practice room equipped with a piano.
There is an oven for the girls to develop cooking skills or make food for special occasions, such as birthdays.
Each day our catering staff provides breakfast from 6:45am, a packed morning tea and lunch, afternoon tea when the students return from school and dinner at 6:00pm. The boarders enjoy a variety of special occasion meals such as theme dinners and the farewell to Seniors dinner.
Study and homework are important aspects of boarding at Clayfield College and all girls are encouraged to work towards their personal academic goals. Girls in Years 5 to 8 do their homework in the study room and computer lab. The computer lab is equipped with 30 computers connected to the College network. Year 9 boarders may choose to work in the study room or Dining Room. Years 10 to 12 girls do their study at desks in their rooms, where they have internet access, or in the Dining Room where tutors assist. The boarding staff supervises the homework sessions and monitor progress on assignments and study. Academic Tutors provide additional learning support on a roster and subject basis.
First Prep commences at 5.00pm and finishes at 5.50pm for Years 5 – 8. Second Prep commences at 7pm until 7.45pm. First Prep commences at 7pm for all other year levels and finishes at 9.00pm. Second Prep commences at 9.00pm until lights out at 10.30pm.
Additional tutor assistance may be requested and will be organised, with the cost to be incurred by the family.
In the Carolyn Hauff Boarding House, a variety of enjoyable and entertaining recreational options are available for boarders. There are regular supervised weekend shopping trips and in-house movie nights. Activities the boarders often participate in include:
The Boarding House Recreational Program is supported by a risk analysis and management system that complies with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and duty of care considerations.
The Boarding House has a generous weekend leave policy. All leave is approved by the Head of Boarding, after confirmation of required details. Girls must be collected and returned by parents or hosts, unless special arrangements have been made in writing by the parent or guardian at the time of submitting the leave form. Weekend leave is unrestricted in quantity, with the application of certain conditions.
Special leave is available for Years 11 and 12 students and a special form must be completed for this leave at the beginning of the year.
The Boarding House recognises the importance to its boarding students of maintaining contact with family and friends. A number of facilities are available to enable boarders to maintain quality communication with family and friends ‘in the outside world’.
Boarding House Reception has an independent telephone system and a facsimile machine. A number of telephones are situated throughout the Boarding House.
Although Boarding House Reception telephone operates between 6.30am and 10.30pm Monday through Sunday, it is transferred to mobile at 6.00pm each evening. Messages are able to be left on the answering service when the phone system is switched off during other times. Emergency contact can be made with the Head of Boarding on mobile 0409 059 732.
Personal mobile phones are permitted within the Boarding House; however, usage is restricted to certain hours of the day. During the evening, before lights out, all mobile phones for boarders in Years 5 - 11 are secured until the following morning, thus enabling all girls to enjoy an uninterrupted sleep.
The study room is equipped with 30 computers and the boarders are able to access their school email account after school and on the weekends. Students are able to access the internet and email facilities in their rooms. Private emailing, texting and phone calls are not permitted during Prep. Boarders in Years 5 - 11, who own laptops, are required to hand them in each evening before lights out.
The mail is delivered on a daily basis and distributed to the students upon their return from school.
Email contact is available through the school internet system. Email contact can be made to the Head of Boarding via [email protected] or [email protected].
The Head of Boarding is available to families and boarders, via the telephone during office hours on 07 3262 0221 or on mobile 0409 059 732 after hours in emergency.
A monthly communique, the 'The Boarders' Brief', is posted electronically each calendar month during term time. This colourful document details all the Boarding House events and features pictures of the boarders enjoying social activities.
