Boarding

Day & Boarding Students (Aged 11 – 18)

Our application system is online and easy to use, the first step is to complete the registration from.

To get a real sense of what it means to become a Ruthinian, we strongly recommend that prospective students come and visit the school at one of our Open Days or arrange a private tour during which the admissions department can show you the school in action. For international applicants, please view our video prospectus and take a look at our virtual tour which enables you to look around our accommodation and main buildings.

Due to substantial demand for places at Ruthin School, we recommend approaching us regarding application early. We often have parental enquiries two years in advance so we encourage a proactive approach to applications allowing us to give early confirmation of a place.

Because we accept applications from students in the UK and across the world, please contact us if you wish us to consider an application during the school year. Openings may arise and we will consider late applicants and mid-year applicants on a case by case basis.

Full boarding available – including holidays.

Pupils are accommodated in one of six boarding houses – Archbishop Williams House (boys in Forms 1 – 5), Russell House (boys in L6), Trevor House (boys in U6), Wynne House (girls in Forms 1 – 5), Ellis House (girls in L6) and Goodman House (girls in U6).

Each boarding house has a resident Houseparent and an assistant Houseparent. The staff look after the pupils in the evenings, at weekends and in the half-term and Easter holidays. The Houseparents take full responsibility for the pastoral care of the pupils in their house. The Principal acts in loco parentis for all pupils and is the legal guardian for all boarding pupils.

The School employs three full time nurses (two fully residential) to advise on medical issues. The school doctor visits weekly to hold a surgery for boarders.

The accommodation in each house consists mainly of single or double rooms. All rooms in Goodman House and Trevor House are single with their own bathroom.

Wireless Internet is provided in each boarding house so that the boarders can communicate with friends and family using WhatsApp, WeChat, Facebook and Skype. The connection is monitored and closed at 11 pm (earlier for the younger pupils).

Boys

Boy boarders are housed in Gladstone, Casson or Trevor.

Pool and snooker competitions are in great demand, particularly in the autumn term. Television, especially the sports channels, is extremely popular, and it has been known for the boys to request a change in the time of lunch to coincide with half time in a crucial Premier league match.

The boys are also proficient at cooking; it is a very important post-prep activity, particularly at weekends. All boarding houses have large kitchens so that a range of cuisine from all over the world can be prepared.

Girls

Girls are accommodated in Wynne, Ellis or Goodman. Rooms accommodate either 1 or 2 pupils.

Continued developments in the communal areas have led to the kitchen becoming the hub of the house in the evenings, with all the girls proficient at cooking rather than relying on quick fix goodies.

Facilities

The boarding environment becomes increasingly attractive year after year.

A number of day pupils convert to boarding having perceived the advantages of living on site. The quality of the boarding provision is assessed by the Care Inspectorate Wales inspection unit which not only undertakes announced visits but also visits the School unannounced and spends time talking to pupils.

Boarding pupils have access to listeners outside School should they have problems which they do not wish to share with teachers. The School has a clear Child Protection Policy. Recent inspection reports have commented favourably on the boarding environment.

The medical care of pupils is organised through resident nurses. All boarders are registered with the local surgery and routine appointments for the dentist and doctor can be made through the School nurse. Boarding pupils are able to have treatment at hospital should this be required.

Younger pupils are accompanied to the surgery and dentist, and transport is arranged if required. Any visits to hospital are accompanied. A number of staff have undertaken first aid training. If a pupil needs close monitoring when ill, they are accommodated in the medical area.
