Boarding Life

At Abbotsholme we have three main boarding houses in the senior school with house parents, who oversee the care of pupils from Year 6 to 13. These boarding facilities have a range of options to suit you. We can provide flexible accommodation which may be for a few nights each week, a weekly boarding option allowing students to stay Monday – Friday and full boarding which includes weekends.

Our boarding population comprises of students from the UK and other international countries, and helps to shape the culturally rich and diverse community of which we are extremely proud.

Our boarding houses are as follows:

  • Orchard - Girls' Boarding (Year 6 to 11)
  • Cedarholme - Boys' Boarding (Year 6 to 11)
  • Barnfield - Sixth Form Boarding Village (Year 12 and 13)

Orchard House

Orchard House is a girls' boarding house with girls aged 9 to 17 years. The house team work together to provide a homely environment where the girls are able to study in the comfort of their rooms whilst enjoy the social spaces watching films, socialising, cooking and relaxing. The house has a close caring community with clear communication structures to allow for quality care and provision.

Life in Orchard House is balanced by study, sport, creative arts and social time. The girls are expected to manage their time making sure they use all of the opportunities given to them.

The girls meet regularly with the staff to discuss their progress within boarding, school life as well as life outside of Abbotsholme. The contact with the house teams allows us to ensure that we are aware of individual talents, share the girl’s personal achievements and also embed a sense of personal and house pride.

Creating regular house meetings, year group meetings, and meeting with the house prefects allows two way communication between staff and pupils.

In Orchard House we respect others by working through differences, solving problems and allowing the girls to develop into confident young people.

All of the girls are given roles and responsibilities within the boarding house to promote a successfully smooth running community.

Cedarholme House

Cedarholme Boys' Boarding House is home to a number of full, weekly and flexi boarders. Our younger boys, up to Year 9, board in twin bedrooms on our junior corridor, with their own bathroom facilities, kitchen and common room. Our senior boys, Years 10 and 11, live upstairs. We come together as a house at the start of each morning for roll call.

Throughout Cedarholme we encourage responsibility from a young age, and boys take ownership of cleaning their kitchens, sorting laundry, and morning wake ups.

Boarders are supported by a House Parent, an Assistant House Parent, and a team of duty staff who offer a timetable of after school activities and academic support. Each evening we have Sixth Form pupils to assist with our Prep School pupils. In addition to this, we have in house leaders - experienced boarders who are able to offer guidance on all aspects of boarding life.

As a community we take part in a range of activities and trips.

We celebrate and share individual passions and achievements in house, and enjoy displaying the art work, photography and poetry of our boarders. Birthdays are celebrated with cake at morning roll call.

Barnfield Sixth Form Village

Barnfield Sixth Form Boarding House is a unique form of accommodation for Sixth Form pupils giving them an outstanding opportunity to live in an environment that will help prepare them for independence and self-reliance once they leave Abbotsholme.

Pupils live in a small community, in well-equipped log cabins, where they have the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves and their living environment. Barnfield is a mixed house with six pupils of the same gender in each cabin. The pupils establish strong enduring friendships, learn to support and appreciate others, share their own personal goals as well as celebrating the success of others.

There are numerous opportunities for the Barnfield pupils to take part in extra-curricular activities alongside their academic programme. The boarders have extended use of the sports, music, art and library facilities as well as a wide range of external trips such as Alton Towers, cultural city trips, cinema, bowling and meals out at local restaurants.

There is a resident member of staff on hand, however we try and encourage independence as our belief is that this development will play a significant part in preparing our young people not only for university but, more significantly, for life itself. They have independence and responsibility whilst remaining under the same caring pastoral umbrella enjoyed by all who live and work in the Abbotsholme community.
