King's Bruton

At King’s Bruton there are six boarding houses, three for the boys and three for the girls.

We are proud of the fact that day pupils do not have a separate house but are fully integrated as members of one of the six boarding houses. Our boarding was rated “outstanding” during an inspection. We were pleased that Inspectors have highlighted how this Independent Boarding School provides an outstanding level of care for the children it accommodates:

Boys’ Houses

  • Blackford House
  • Lyon House
  • New House

Girls’ Houses

  • Arion House
  • Priory House
  • Wellesley House

Arion House
Arion girls genuinely care for each other, encouraging each other in everything they do and bring a listening ear when necessary. Their team spirit is exemplary, taking part is what matters and helping each other to achieve, being interested in and enjoying each other’s success. Drama, Music, Sport, Arts; every girl contributes to the life of this vibrant House and in so doing, develops skills and discovers dormant talents.

The House is situated on the High Street with its garden behind, which provides access to all the other school buildings. Because of its position there are splendid views across the School to the hills beyond and the well-known Dovecote. It’s fun to cross the river to reach one’s lessons too!

In our free time we enjoy a variety of activities in house, including cooking, films, games, BBQ’s, karaoke and nacho nights. Birthdays are special times and we love to celebrate in style! There are some annual highlights too - notably a Beach Trip in the Summer Term which includes fish and chips, and the end of the year jaunt to Bath to ‘Jimmy’s’ all you can eat! Blackford House
Blackford House is the House at the heart of King’s, both physically and metaphorically speaking.

We are centrally located within the School campus and are 'home' to both boarders and day boys. We passionately believe everyone is someone and that every boy is known for whom he is, not just for what he can bring to the House.

In Blackford, we have a family atmosphere and encourage a sense of purpose, especially during work times and prep. We hope every boy will represent the House in sport, music, drama or debating, to name but a few of the opportunities on offer. Not everyone has to be brilliant at something, or indeed brilliant at anything, but there is room for boys who strive to get the most out of what is on offer and who, we hope, will become well-rounded, confident young men by the time they leave us, ready and prepared to take on the next stage in their lives, whatever it may be. We want to create confidence without arrogance, and therefore politeness is a very important part of being in Blackford. In Blackford House, it is our main aim to ensure that the boys are confident and happy.

Lyon House
Welcome to Lyon House, one of the seven boarding houses at King's. We have the unique position of being located alongside the major playing fields of the School and therefore we proudly boast of having the largest back garden!

The House accommodates boarders and day boys. The boys in the lower years share rooms in 2s, 3s and 4s and as they enter the Sixth Form, nearly all the boys have their own single room. We pride ourselves in everything we do, from debating, to sporting events and house singing.

There is a great sense of belonging and ownership in Lyon House: it is special place because of the young men who live in it. They look after each other, and encourage each other to do their best. We have outstanding individuals who inspire others, display modesty, and value everyone as much for their effort and personality, as for their individual attainment.

New House
New House stands proudly at the heart of the King’s campus and both boarding and day boys are fully integrated and work collaboratively to support each other.

It provides a nurturing, safe and caring environment in which pupils value the attributes of others; facing challenges together and making friends for life. Pupils have a wide range of talents and interests, both in and out of the classroom, from music and drama to rugby and kayaking. New House prides itself on putting its best foot forward in the many inter-house events at King’s and maintains a strong sense of pride and identity. New House offers many exciting activities and trips throughout the year with highlights including: tenpin bowling, delicious house meals at local restaurants and further afield.

New House has a large Common Room with a flat screen television complete with satellite facilities, DVD player, surround sound system and Apple TV with a Netflix subscription. There is also a large fully-equipped house kitchen and games room with pool table, table tennis and dart board facilities along with full WiFi coverage.

Priory House
The girls are a wonderful mix of musicians, budding actresses and future sports stars. We are located on the High Street of Bruton and boast to be one of the oldest houses in the town. Priory House is very sociable and friendly and someone is always available for a chat or moral support when needed, making it feel more of a home than a Boarding House.

We pride ourselves on catering for the individual, recognising each personality and unique talent, and in doing so, helping every girl to develop her full potential. Within Priory House, we believe the relationship between House staff and parents is a crucial one and by working in partnership, parents and House staff can ensure the continuity of support that allows each pupil to feel secure, valued and understood. We love our house nights which range from baking competitions, games nights through to joining with one of the other boarding Houses.

Wellesley House
Wellesley House was the first girls’ House at King's, and we have a special team spirit that is evident everywhere.

The House has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where everyone looks after one another; the older girls acting as ‘big sister’ to the younger girls with time, encouragement and words of advice. We enjoy spending time together, whether baking brownies, cuddling Lola the lab or going on house trips to Splashdown!

Wellesley girls always give time and commitment to all they do and they are encouraged to reach their full potential academically, musically, artistically or on the sports field. The House opened in 1984 with just eight Sixth Form girls and now we have more than five times as many girls aged between 13 to 18, who over the years have gone to Oxbridge, reached Grade VIII with Distinction in music and represented their County, and Country in sport.
