There are four boarding houses at Mill Hill. These are occupied by our 195 full and weekly boarders from both Mill Hill School and Mill Hill International. Mill Hill provides the perfect setting for its boarders. Our spacious 150-acre campus is beautiful and bursting with nature. We are also just 30 minutes away from central London. This allows our pupils to live in a relaxed countryside environment and explore London at the same time.
Friendliness and warmth are at the heart of our boarding community. This ensures that our pupils have a sense of ‘home-away-from home’ whilst living and learning at Mil Hill. Our Boarder’s views and opinions are very important to the staff so we regularly ask for their thoughts on various issues. We also prioritise giving our pupils unique and enriching experiences. Our close proximity to London allows us to organise a variety of fun and exciting trips. This is complemented by a range of weekly on-campus activities and special occasions for pupils.
Facilities
The Mill Hill School Foundation is fortunate to be situated in a beautiful secure parkland setting just a few miles from the centre of London. Boarders enjoy enhanced access to all the schools facilities:
Being on-site, boarders are also able to take full advantage of the wide variety of evening concerts, lectures and theatrical events that occur throughout the year.
Homework
Structured homework sessions every evening enable boarders to keep up with all their schoolwork, as well as to develop a dedicated work ethic that prepares them for university and beyond.
Outings
Each term stimulating and interesting outings are arranged for boarders such as trips to London’s many museums and art galleries. Pupils are also taken bowling, ice-skating and to the cinema and the theatre.
Activities
Within the Boarding House, activities are arranged such as film nights, concerts and parties so that boarders can get together and have fun as a group.
Pupils can opt to join the boarding community as either Full or Weekly Boarders.
Full Boarding predominantly appeals to our international pupils, or pupils whose parents don’t live locally. Full Boarders are supported by an education Guardian of their choosing.
Weekly Boarding is convenient for pupils whose parents live more locally, but who wish to benefit from the structure offered by a more flexible boarding opportunity. Our Weekly Boarders return home on Friday evening, or Saturday morning if they have Activities or Sports commitments to fulfil, and return to school on Sunday evening or Monday morning.
The flexibility offered within our Boarding provision makes it an appealing and practical option.
Our five purpose-built Boarding Houses range in size, making each House entirely unique.
Our recently-refurbished smallest House, St Bees, is home to 14 Year 9 and 10 boys. New House, our female-only House refurbished in 2017, is home to 29 girls across Year 9-13. Collinson, Ridgeway and Burton Bank Houses are all co-educational Houses of mixed year groups, with their number of boarders ranging from 38 to 59. Our boarders develop a close attachment to their particular House, where they live and study under the care of a Housemaster or House Parent who knows them thoroughly and who maintains a close relationship with their families back home. House identity is keenly fostered as part of a close-knit community.
There is a wide range of activities on offer for boarders to take part in, both formal and informal.
Co-curricular Activities
We have identified characteristics of leadership, team work, curiosity, resilience, confidence, creativity and independent thinking as key personal traits which drive our extensive, broad and challenging co-curricular programme. This is an area of School life of which we are rightly proud, believing as we do in the importance of a holistic approach to education. For more information please click here.
Saturday Morning Activities
Our compulsory Saturday Activities Programme provides Boarders with a range of opportunities to develop skills across all aspects of school life. Some activities are academic in nature, especially in the run up to examinations. Others are more practical, such as cookery and gardening. We also have a wellbeing programme which includes mindfulness and yoga. Occasionally, there are educational trips to museums and galleries in central London.
Weekend Programme
Boarders have the opportunity to join a wide variety of trips in and around London. There is an expectation that Boarders will join in one onsite and one offsite per term, giving them the opportunity to enjoy the wide range of activities on offer in such a multicultural, diverse city. The trips and activities enable the integration of the boarding community.
