Around 30% of our students are boarders who come from the UK and around the world to be part of a boarding family that supports and embraces them during their school years and for the rest of their lives.
We welcome boarders from the age of 8, and our aim is to provide a safe, friendly and fun boarding environment which reflects the qualities of a good home life. Each of our experienced teams of house staff operate under the supervision of the Head of Boarding and provide the care, comfort and support which is so important for the girls’ well-being and success.
The boarding houses are all located on site and are a ‘home away from home’, providing a relaxing environment with an extended family of friends, many of whom become friends for life.
Bruton School for Girls is a member of the Boarding Schools Association (BSA) and the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA). We are accredited for the Forces Continuity of Education Allowance.
The boarding houses offer comfortable and homely accommodation with common rooms, kitchens and dining areas as well as access to computer facilities. Prep girls share a dormitory style room and older girls either share a twin room or have a room of their own. All girls in Senior 5 and Sixth form enjoy their own study bedrooms.
Both our Housemistresses are assisted by a team of Graduate Assistant Trainee Teachers, GAP students, Language Assistants. Our Deputy Head, Mrs Rachel Robbins oversees our boarding provision.
There are three types of boarding and we are very flexible in our approach.
Full Boarding
Full Boarding offers all the benefits of immersing the girls in life at school. A programme of activities is arranged every weekend and may involve in-house activities such as craft or baking as well as trips to local cinemas, shopping and cultural visits. Time is always set aside for the completion of prep.
Weekly Boarding
Weekly Boarding enables girls to go home for weekends whilst participating fully in school life during the week. Parents can collect their daughters from school at the end of Friday afternoon and return on Monday morning or Sunday evening if preferred.
Flexi-Boarding
Flexi-Boarding provides the opportunity for day girls to enjoy the boarding experience as and when the need arises. This is a ‘supper, bed and breakfast’ option which, subject to availability, responds to the occasional family need or a way for girls to maximise their involvement in a particular activity at school, be with friends or perhaps to celebrate a birthday!
Weekend activities are planned at the beginning of each term and often involve in-house activities such as craft, baking, games and simple family-style fun. There are also trips to local cinemas, shopping and cultural visits to Bath or Bristol; and large termly trips include a very popular Christmas shopping and pantomime trip. On Sunday mornings girls may enjoy swimming, treasure hunts or local walks. Time is always set aside for the completion of prep.
Sports matches against other schools often take place on a Saturday and weekend activities will be planned around these, so that girls can play in the match and take part in an activity.
