Affording Pomfret
Our goal is to make the Pomfret Experience accessible to families at every income level.
We recognize that the cost of an independent school education is significant and that many families will make sacrifices to have their child attend Pomfret. Therefore, we make every effort to assist admitted families with the financial commitments involved in financing a Pomfret education. This assistance comes in the form of financial aid, flexible payment plans, parent loans, and merit scholarships.
Financial Aid
Application Process
In order to objectively assess your demonstrated financial need, we partner with School and Student Services (SSS), which is administered by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), to process financial aid applications. SSS will help you estimate the amount you can contribute and forward that estimate to Pomfret. It's one form, for one fee, for any number of siblings, for any number of schools. When you submit your admissions application, please be sure to indicate that you are applying for financial aid through SSS.
Financial Aid Application Deadline
January 1 for Returning Families
February 1 for New Families
Step 1 » Parent Financial Statement
Visit School and Student Services to begin your Parent’s Financial Statement (PFS). You will be given a username and password that will allow you to return to your PFS at a later time in order to update it before submitting it. For divorced or separated parents, each parent, regardless of custodial arrangements, must complete a financial aid application. This statement should be completed no later than February 1.
Our school code is 5842.
Step 2 » Tax Documents
In addition to completing the PFS, each financial aid applicant must also submit the following tax documents to SSS:
Signed copies of your Form 1040 federal income tax returns for the last two years, including attachments.
Your W2 Forms for the most recent two years.
If self-employed, you must also submit a Schedule C, and any corresponding K-1, Form 1065, or 1120 documents.
Please Note: Funding for our need-based financial aid program is supported through the generous contributions of our alumni. Despite this support, requests for financial aid typically exceed available funds, and awards are made to only a percentage of accepted students. You should be aware that every year there are applicants who are accepted to Pomfret who qualify for but do not receive financial aid.
Financial Aid Policy
Financial aid at Pomfret is awarded based on demonstrated financial need. To determine financial need, Pomfret uses a nationally standardized system for financial aid offered by School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS). SSS collects a family’s financial information and performs an initial analysis, providing an estimated need to Pomfret School. The Financial Aid Committee at Pomfret uses this estimated need as a guideline in determining financial aid eligibility and awards. For a comprehensive guide to the financial aid process as outlined by SSS.
If you receive financial aid in your child’s first year, you will continue to receive financial aid in subsequent years as long as you demonstrate a continued need for assistance. Circumstances may change, which is why we require that families submit a new financial aid application each year.
If your child enrolls at Pomfret without financial aid, you may apply for financial aid in subsequent years. However, it is unlikely that you will receive financial aid. That being said, if you are able to demonstrate a significant change in circumstances, we will make every effort to provide assistance to our current families.
It is Pomfret School’s policy that each parent, regardless of custodial arrangements, must complete a financial aid application through SSS.
